Aga Khan University (AKU) Programme Specialists Jobs in Kenya

The Aga Khan University (AKU), one of the nine agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network, is committed to international standards of excellence in education, research and service.

The University strives for quality, access, impact and relevance in all its programmes and selects faculty, staff and students on the basis of merit, irrespective of gender, race, religion or domicile.

AKU is currently planning a major expansion of its existing programmes in East Africa, in medicine, nursing and teacher education. Planning is also underway for a Faculty of Arts and Sciences in East Africa (AKU-FAS, EA) which aims to be an innovative, responsive, accessible and world-class institution, partnering with major international academic institutions.

AKU-FAS, EA is seeking to recruit appropriately qualified individuals as Programme Specialists.

Reporting to the Head of Academic Planning, AKU-FAS, EA, Programme Specialists will be responsible for defining course content in key disciplines, structuring and sequencing the curriculum and identifying appropriate teaching methods in the following areas:

Programme Specialist, Arts and New Media

The Arts Programme is positioning itself to become a hub for creativity, knowledge creation and innovation and a centre of ideas around the expressive and digital arts addressing emerging opportunities in the creative economy in East Africa.

The programme offers three hubs around which ideas are evolving. These are: Digital Media and the Arts, Expressive Arts and Business for the Arts.

Candidate Profile:

This position is for a creative, open-minded, and dynamic arts practitioner, with broad experiences in the business and arts sector.

S/he should have expertise in higher education, preferably in East Africa and in enhancing its participation in the global knowledge economy. Interdisciplinary professional experience with strong IT knowledge and insights into eLearning trends are also necessary.

The person should demonstrate an ability to turn concepts into content.

Programme Specialist, Social Sciences and Humanities

The overall structure of degree programmes in the Social Sciences and Humanities are deeply integrated and focussed on four main career options: academic, public intellectual, entrepreneurial expert, and policy analysis in international organizations.

It will also serve as an intellectual bridge between the fields of the fine, performing and expressive Arts and the material, natural and systems Sciences.

Candidate Profile:

The candidate must demonstrate competence in one or several domains of knowledge germane to environmental sociology, resilience ecology, rural or urban sociology, collective action and property rights, natural resource governance, political ecology, conflict and environment, culture and environment, climate change, environmental economics and policy analysis.

Research and teaching interests could include (but are not limited to) environmental change, sustainable development, population and environment, environmental knowledge production, information technology, environmental justice and inequality.

Knowledge in African Studies will be a particular advantage.

Requirements:

Candidates for both of the above positions should hold a PhD in the relevant area with substantial teaching, research and practical exposure, and at least 5 years’ of experience of an academic setting with an understanding of undergraduate teaching.
