University Matters, Whether You Like It or Not.

A close friend of mine is thinking of taking evening classes to purse a Bcom degree. He come to me last week seeking my advice on which university to register for the degree. His worry was not so much on the fees to pay but on how marketable he would after taking the Bcom from certain universities than from others.

Which brings us to the question? In terms of employment, does it matter which university you attended? Does it matter whether you are a UoN graduate as opposed to Mount Kenya University. Are universities in Kenya the same in terms of perception? And more importantly do Kenyan employers favor certain universities?

Colleges and universities have personalities of their own. Some conjure up images of scholarly learning (Think of Strathmore University), while some are known more for their hard partying than their academics (Think of the USIU, and many private Universities in Kenya) .

Most of us go to college or University to have a better life, meaning a professional career . But just how important is the institution where you choose to get that degree? Sure, Ivy League schools, the Yale’s and Harvard’s of the world, carry a status that employers find impressive and assuring, especially if they themselves went there.

There are Universities that, justified or not, have a certain amount of grandeur about them. At the very moment of mentioning them they have an impressive nature about them. If nothing else, these Universities would certainly make a person feel proud of themselves for attending such a university and being able to tell people about it

I agree with you in many respects. Yes, in the END, what school you go to doesn’t matter. But it does matter in general. But again, how much does it matter? Only to a slight degree.. An employer will always choose you over a smelly Harvard student. Or an employer will choose a promising graduate over a stupid looking Harvard graduate. But all things being equal (which is a rare case), a Harvard graduate will always be chosen over a graduate from some funny college. But again, a case where all things are equal is almost non-existent.

My point, employers are human like you and i and are prone to prejudices. When registering for that degree its important to ask around and find what people perceive of that university. You could end up spending thousands and at the end of it not improve on your career.

Does it matter which university you attend?
