5 Things You Must Consider After Losing Your Job

Job loss is no good news to anyone ever, this could be as a result of multiple factors from layoffs to poor performance by an individual.

Job loss takes a toll to an employee and employees do not take initiative on what happens to employees who have lost jobs due to factors beyond their control.

In the past few years massive layoffs have been witnessed in parastatals like Kenya Railways. private companies that have jumped into the retrenchment bandwagon include  Flower farm Karuturi (2,600), Kenya Meat Commission (118), Sameer Africa (600), Portland Cement (1,000), and Uchumi (253).

But what happens when you lose your day job? It is easy to tell someone to maintain positivity but the reality is that it is not easy.

So how do you ensure a smooth transition from a layoff to a job search?

1. Accept the Reality.

Resisting the job loss causes more pain. Sometimes you know why you were fired, sometimes you just don’t. Don’t waste any time figuring it out.

Be mature about anything you feel may have contributed to it. See the difference between reality and illusion; reality is you lost your job, illusion is you’ll never find another job.

Take a moment to go inside yourself, get silent and listen to your intuition. Some of your best ideas will come when you slow down enough and tune in.

2. Surround Yourself With Positive People

Emotions are contagious. The people around you impact how you see yourself, your situation and what you do to improve it. Be intentional about who you hang out with and don’t get beaten down to the level of those who have given up.

It wastes precious time and energy far better spent getting back into the workforce. Surround yourself with people who lift you up, and avoid those who don’t.

Read positive books, watch inspiring movies, and remember that your family will take their cue from you. Let them know that while you may not have chosen your circumstances, you are confident that with time and effort things will be back on track.

3. Utilize your networks

The more people who know what you want, the more who can help you get it. The vast majority of jobs are never advertised utilizing your networks is particularly relevant when it comes to finding those jobs that are filled via word of mouth.

Reach out to people you know and enlist their support in making any introductions or connections that could help you. Whatever you do, never underestimate the power of your network to open up opportunities.

5. Looking for a job is now your job.

It may take a lot longer to find a new job than you think it will. Many people are running out their unemployment benefits, taking six months or more to find a new job.

You might have to settle for less. Your previous job might not be available currently, don’t get discouraged. Remember, even in a bad economy, there are always jobs for good people.
