In order to make it in life, one must have gone through the process of failure at least once. It is one of the inevitable paths that often times leads to success.
We may feel like we are behind those around us when they seem to have it all figured out. However, just like the following individuals, you too can turn your failure into success.
Chris Kirubi
Chris Kirubi was brought up in a poor background. He lost his parents at an early age and thus had to start work, to meet the daily needs of his family.
This is what laid a foundation for him to become one of the most successful entrepreneurs in Kenya. Building his business empire however also came with its challenges.
When he tried to venture into the painting industry, no big contractor wanted to buy his paint. He eventually went into huge debt that forced him to close the company.
Today, he is one of the richest entrepreneurs in Kenya. He is the director of Centum Investments and owns Capital FM. He even runs several companies across Africa.
Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs was fired from the company he founded – Apple. He also failed with NeXT Computer Company and the Lisa computer. However, when he made his return to Apple, he led the business to become one of the most profitable companies not only in the US, but worldwide.
Peter Munga
He is the founder of Equity Bank, Kenya’s largest commercial bank. Like Chris Kirubi, Peter grew up in a struggling family.
His father, a small-scale trader, was jailed in 1952 when Munga was still in lower primary. This forced him to join his mother, Beth Nyambura, in her small business to provide for the family.
He moved from place to place with his mother in search of a better life. This is after his father, Ben Kahara, was detained by the colonial government.
Today, Munga owns less than 0.5% of the publicly-traded bank, but he owes the bulk of his fortune to his 26% stake in Britam Holding, a listed financial services giant.
His shares in Britam are valued at more than $50 million. He is also a major shareholder of Equatorial Nuts, one of the leading macadamia processing companies in East Africa.
Oprah Winfrey
After only seven and a half months, Oprah Winfrey was fired from her job co-anchoring the 6pm news. In another news job she got, Oprah says: “I once went back … after covering a family that had been burned out and brought them some of my blankets and stuff. And the assistant news director … told me … that if I did that again and they found out about it, I could be fired, because I was involving myself in other people’s stories. Which is true, you’re there to cover the story, not get involved in it…”
Oprah became a media billionaire, hosted the highest ranked TV show of its kind in history, and is an incredible philanthropist – getting involved in other people’s stories in order to help them.
