Job Summary


This role is responsible for the provision of leadership and coordination of program activities related to the Center’s three programmatic areas. This entails providing strategic leadership through developing and articulating a clear vision, designing strategies to actualize that vision and inspiring program teams to be the best they can be. Responsibilities


Key Responsibilities:


  • Guide the strategic direction of programs in alignment with the APHRC corporate strategy.

  • Lead the development, implementation and monitoring of program strategies.

  • Contribute to the overall institutional strategy ensuring alignment of program priorities.

  • Oversee the research governance role / program synergy roles including developing a strong interdisciplinary culture, promoting synergies.

Financial Responsibilities:


  • Coordinate the identification of priority needs for staffing, equipment, training to be incorporated in the Center’s annual budgets.

  • Monitor with support from the finance unit, the financial performance of the programs, identifying and following up areas of improvement.

  • Ensure appropriate financial sustainability targets are set and monitored at program level in line with the Center’s annual budget and fundraising strategy.

  • Ensure judicious use of the Center’s unrestricted resources.

Candidate Profile


Experience and Qualifications:


  • PhD level degree in area of specialisation relevant to the Center’s programmatic priorities under research, Research & Related Capacity Strengthening and Policy, Engagement & Communication.

  • At least 15 years of relevant post-PhD experience.

  • Demonstrated experience in the population health research and development landscape.

  • Deep understanding/experience with initiatives to strengthen the African R&D ecosystem.

  • Experience in a senior leadership role for at least 8 years.

  • Demonstrated success in developing, fundraising for and leading multi-year, multi-country, multi-million dollar initiatives in Africa.

Job specification:


The incumbent, working with study and MOH teams, will be responsible for performing ultrasound scans, training, and mentoring frontline health providers to perform obstetric ultrasound for the FAMLI study and other studies in the Pregnancy Surveillance platform. This will entail performing scans and archiving images for the Pregnancy Surveillance studies and assisting the ministry of health staff to perform routine scans.


Duties and responsibilities:



  •  Performing obstetric ultrasound scans for pregnant women participating in the FAMLI ultrasound study and other studies on the Pregnancy Surveillance platform

  •  Conducting assigned study duties per the study protocol.

  •  Assisting ministry of health staff to perform ultrasound for non-study participants.

  •  Training and mentoring health care providers (nurses, clinical officers) on obstetric ultrasound.

  •  Explaining sonographic procedures to patients, answering questions, preparing patients by applying the gel to the skin, and positioning the patients on the table.

  •  Selecting and examining images, looking for differences between healthy and pathological areas, and determining if the scope of the exam should be extended, based on preliminary findings.

JOB PURPOSE


Under the overall guidance of the Deputy Country Director programmes (DCD-P) and direct supervision of the Head of Programme and Technical Support Services, the Gender Officer will work on integrating and mainstreaming gender, disability inclusion at the strategic, programmatic, and operational levels across all locations of WFP’s presence in Kenya. In addition, the incumbent will provide expert advice to management and support staff with programming and implementation consistent with WFP’s Humanitarian Disability Inclusion and Gender commitments. The positions require strong gender mainstreaming and transformative programming skills programme design and analysis. The position will focus on ensuring that all WFP programme areas are engendered and result in narrowing any observed gender-related gaps while achieving gender equality, parity and empowerment. The position will ensure that strong partnerships are built with internal and external stakeholders and ensure that WFP’s zero-tolerance policy against sexual exploitation and abuse is fully integrated into programme delivery.

Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of gender-transformative approaches to humanitarian assistance, application of humanitarian protection principles; understanding of PSEA and other forms of gender-based violence in emergency and other humanitarian settings; understanding of gender and protection components of civil-military relations; and other humanitarian policy issues and its linkages with humanitarian assistance.


Work Experience: Minimum 3 years’ experience at management level focusing specifically on gender in humanitarian contexts.
