Clinical Officer Anesthetist Job in Kenya

Our client a re-known Hospital in Nairobi targeting the middle and low income communities is in the processes of increasing its service delivery effectiveness. This has necessitated the need to urgently hire a Clinical Officer Anesthetist as described below.

Vacant Position: Clinical Officer Anesthetist 
Reporting: Medical Officer In-Charge
Job Summary: The incumbent shall be responsible for performing preoperative patient assessments, briefing patients, administering anesthetics, and monitoring patients during surgery and recovery.

Key Duties and responsibilities

1. Performing pre-operative patient assessments which may include but not limited to:
a. Being well-informed of the patient’s condition and any allergies or medical history that may influence what medicines the patient can handle. 
b. Conducting physical examinations
c. Reviewing and understanding a patient’s condition and treatment options, so that they can be certain how the anesthetics will respond within the patient
d. Making pre-anesthesia visits to the patient and documenting observations on patient records
2. Educating patients about the process and effects of anesthesia before surgery,
a. Keeping the patient calm in this sometimes stressful scenario before operation
b. Informing the patient what his/her role is in the whole process of operation
c. Attending to patient needs prior to, during and after surgical procedures
3. Administering anesthetics which can be local, inhalation, intravenous, spinal and other anesthetics prescribed by Anesthesiologist whenever it is applicable.
a. Accurately measuring, mixing and putting together the appropriate concentration and mix of anesthetics to be administered.
b. Inducing total or partial loss of sensation or consciousness by administering anesthesia.
c. Ensuring patients receive appropriate levels of the prescribed drugs before surgeries or other procedures.
d. Fits masks to patients’ face, turns dials and stetting gauges of equipment to regulate the flow of oxygen and other required gases for procedures.
4. Checking/monitoring patients after they have been anesthetized to ensure that the patient is handling/responding to the drugs appropriately.
a. Maintaining anesthesia during surgery, delivery and other medical and dental procedures to ensure proper sedation and pain management following specified methods and procedures appropriate levels of anesthesia during surgery,
b. Ensuring the patient is kept in the best possible care throughout the surgery by constantly altering the amount of the drug and the speed at which it’s administered
c. Ensuring that the patient’s vital signs stay healthy and normal, and they must immediately inform the surgeon or doctor if anything seems unusual.
d. Overseeing patient recovery from anesthesia and caring for the patient's immediate post-operative needs.
5. Following up with the patient through recovery, providing pain killers for pain management, bringing the patient out of anesthesia and ensuring that the patient is responding well and getting back to normal.
6. Working in collaboration and cooperating with both the whole medical staff and the patient every step of the way.
7. Informs physician of patient's condition before, during and after anesthesia.
8. Providing CMEs periodically for the benefit of other medical staff and the self.
9. Performs pre- and post-anesthesia patient visits and documents anesthesia notes on patient records.
10. Ensuring constant familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within your particular field.
11. Initiates remedial measures to prevent surgical shock or other adverse conditions
12. Caring for patients before, during and after a medical procedure or surgery by performing a patient assessment, preparing the patient for anesthesia,

13. Performing other duties as may be required of him by the Medical officer in-charge and/or the Nursing officer in-charge.

Qualification, Competencies required
