Life & Peace Institute Regional Programme Learning Advisor (Sudan, Somalia) Job in Nairobi, Kenya



Job title: Regional Programme Learning Advisor (Sudan, Somalia)
 



Reporting to: Resident Representative (Nairobi and Khartoum)
 



Based: Nairobi with approx. 40% travel to Khartoum, Sudan
 



Duration: 1 year, with possible extension
 



The Life & Peace Institute (LPI) is an international and ecumenical centre that supports and promotes nonviolent approaches to conflict transformation through a combination of research and action that entails the strengthening of existing local capacities and enhancing the preconditions for building peace.


 


In the Horn of Africa, LPI has peacebuilding programmes in Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia and Kenya, with the aim of strengthening local capacities for peace through technical capacity building and accompaniment of locally-led peacebuilding processes. 



LPI brings a range of participatory approaches and methodologies that have proven to be effective tools for creating space for dialogue and peacebuilding action in the different LPI’s areas of intervention.




Purpose of the position: To provide technical and managerial advice to LPI’s Sudan programme, and to provide technical oversight for LPI’s Somalia and Sudan programmes to capture organizational and programmatic learning.




Key tasks and responsibilities:
 



Programme Advisor – Sudan Programme


  • You coordinate the programme and ensure regular and efficient communication with partners and other stakeholders in Sudan.

  • You provide technical support to partners in project management, reporting, design, planning and monitoring. More specifically:


Designing, setting up and sustaining a monitoring & learning system
 



Following up on reporting from LPI’s partner
 



Any other technical accompaniment, as needed.
 



Designing and delivering of tailored and instructive training packages, as needed in different areas to support partners’ work


  • You keep track of the expected results of the Sudan programme, by documenting, and coordinating data collection and analysis processes defined with partners.

  • You report annually to donors (and more frequently depending on donor requirements).

  • You map potential donors for the programme and lead the writing of grant applications.


Learning Advisor – Somalia and Sudan programmes


  • You design, set up and coordinate a learning framework for the two programmes to be enriched through regular consultations with programme teams and internal documentation, with the aim to identify, articulate and build on challenges, good practices and learning opportunities.

  • You regularly update conflict/context analyses for target areas of LPI, through consultation with programme teams and desk-based research.

  • You provide technical assistance to the PME&L advisor in planning, monitoring and learning, as needed.

  • You assist the development of the Monitoring Plan for LPI’s Somalia programme 2017-20, in accordance with donors M&E requirements, and assist the PME&L Advisor and the programme team in ensuring the effective implementation of the system.

  • You work closely with LPI’s policy advisor to extract, develop and refine key policy messages in compliance with LPI’s vision and its work in the target areas.

  • You engage in communities of practice and exchanges of documented learning, including with LPI’s other programmes in the Horn of Africa and Great Lakes region.

  • You provide any other close support to Somalia and Sudan programme advisors as required and in accordance with your technical expertise.

  • You assess and build the capacities of Nairobi office’s programme advisors.


Work Relationships: Resident Representative, Focal Point and Partner in Sudan, Somalia Programme Advisors, PME&L Advisor, Policy Advisor, Head Office in Sweden, Third Parties as needed.




Skills and qualifications required:


  • Professional experience (beyond academic course work) in peacebuilding / conflict transformation project management, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation of peacebuilding and/or development work; fundraising for peacebuilding projects/programmes; research and analysis.

  • Knowledge of Sudanese context is a requirement.

  • University degree (Masters Degree) in Social Sciences (Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology) or Development Studies.

  • Strong writing and reporting skills in English. Knowledge of Arabic and another UN/EU language is an asset.

  • Demonstrated interest in peacebuilding and conflict transformation, experience in NGO fundraising work a strong asset.

  • Balanced, mature personality with developed diplomatic skills, able to cope with working in stressful environments.

  • Eager and flexible mind, willing to acquire new skills on the job.
