Oxfam’s Kenya Programme is a complex programme that incorporates both rapid and slow onset emergencies as well as longer term development and policy work. Oxfam Kenya applies a one programme approach which means it has multiple activities that support a holistic approach to humanitarian, development and advocacy for long lasting change in poverty reduction. Oxfam in Kenya works in the north, principally in Turkana, Dadaab and Wajir, the Nairobi informal settlements and on national level advocacy and coordination issues in multi stakeholder fora. To this end, we are seeking to fill the Markets & Livelihoods Officer position.
You will provide day to day management of markets and livelihoods project activities and also analyse the internal and external communication of locally relevant context to inform appropriate planning taking place through the engagement of appropriate stakeholders and learning events. The post holder will explore and develop opportunities for collaboration with other external stakeholders with interest across the value chain. This may include universities or research institutes, similar global initiatives (Sanergy, x-runner, Ghanasan), plastics manufacturers, waste management companies, end users or waste bi-products. He/she will explore funding opportunities to meet future needs of programme as well as monitor the programme budget. The role provides technical advice to partners on supporting women and youth groups’ business plan and to seek advice to develop enterprises based on the business plans. You will ensure women’s and youth economic leadership in value chain programmes through market access, skill building, capacity building through partnerships to contribute to get impact on lives of target women and youth in urban areas.
To be successful in this role, you will have a first degree in Business Administration or related areas, coupled with in-depth professional experience in the area of private sector development and sound knowledge of urban business sectors. Experience in planning and executing multi-stakeholder, forums and events, including experience in working with the private sector, development partners and the government is essential. You will need demonstrated experience on putting women at the centre of profitable business, with excellent understanding of Value Chain Development approaches including market analysis, sub-sector analysis, market mapping and business service development. You will have strong personal initiative and self motivation, with proven ability to work well under pressure and be flexible in demanding situations. You will have excellent communication skills.
