World University Service of Canada (WUSC)is a Canadian non-profit organization with a mission to foster human development and global understanding through education and training. We are professionals, students, volunteers, faculty, and community leaders working together to find solutions and provide opportunities to the world’s most marginalized people.
WUSC is implementing the Kenya Equity in Education Project (KEEP) project in partnership with Windle Trust Kenya (WTK).The primary objective of the project is to improve enrolment, retention and performance of marginalized girls in primary and secondary school in northern Kenya (Kakuma and Dadaab) host and camp communities. KEEP will also contribute to the opportunities of refugee girls and their families by investing in their future capacity to succeed.
One of the KEEP’s key outputs is to mobilize community support to keep girls in school as long as possible so they may complete a full cycle of education. The activity entitled“Engaging Men and Boys to mobilize support for girls’ education”is a key activity which will contribute to changing attitudes and behaviors of men and boys toward increasing support for girl’s education.
More specifically, a training program for KEEP Community Mobilizers (CM) led by Canadian organization, White Ribbon Campaign (WRC), a KEEP Innovation partner, took place in 2014 and subsequent refresher in 2015 to provide training on how to effectively engage with men and boys in targeted communities. The goal for the trainings was to strengthen the involvement of men and boys in both refugee camps and their host communities in supporting girl’s education. Through these trainings, KEEP aims to encourage boys and men to advocate in favor of the right of girls to enroll and remain in school, fully participate in educational activities and improve girls’ performance.
As a result of the trainings, Community Mobilisers have formed clusters and identified specific activities that would engage communities promoting greater community and stakeholder support for gender equality. The KEEP is seeking the services of a qualified Consultant to provide program support and coordination services to KEEP staff/community members in planning and executing these activities.
