KOMAZA is an award-winning non-profit social enterprise working to end rural poverty by developing economic opportunities for smallholder farmers living in Africa’s infertile and drought-prone regions.
Founded in 2006 and based in Kenya, our innovative grassroots model dramatically boosts household income for rural families by equipping them with resources, knowledge and market linkages to produce high-value climate-appropriate crops on their previously degraded land.
WE ARE HIRING: an early-career (2-3 years experience) business, development, agricultural or environmental professional with training experience to help aggressively scale field operations.
Industry: Social Business / International Development / Start-Up / Non-profit
Function: Crop Production
Commitment: 1 year minimum, 2 years strongly preferred
Location: Kilifi, Kenya
Compensation/Benefits: Associate level, see below
Application Deadline: Rolling
Start Date: Flexible, February 2011 ideal
THE ROLE
The Training Associate will design and implement innovative and engaging learning programs for our field-based staff, which currently totals 100 but will grow rapidly in the next twelve months. This is a challenging -and exciting- role, which is critical for KOMAZA to consistently deliver high-quality services and support to our rural farmers. As KOMAZA expands, your training materials will be built into the over-arching Operations Manual: you will have a tangible legacy. You will:
• Assess gaps in existing training programs and training needs:
Understand field employee development needs and best training methods; incorporate findings into training materials
• Develop a robust field training program:
Design training objectives, strategies, policies, and programs.
This program curriculum will cover technical trainings like planting procedures, pruning, etc as well as professional development topics like presentation skills, record keeping, and workplace conduct.
• Intensive curriculum documentation:
Record and organize all training materials to develop a comprehensive training manual that can be implemented by many different managers as KOMAZA grows.
• Execute comprehensive learning and development program:
Plan, direct, and coordinate training activities – both in the office and in the field. Strategic thinking beyond the next week's trainings to forecast what will be needed next year in an organization twice the size.
• Train the trainer:
Empower and enable staff to lead training sessions of various methods (E.g. individual training, group instruction, lectures, on-the-job training, demonstrations, conferences, meetings, and workshops)
• Monitor and evaluate field training programs:
Incorporate feedback on trainings into program development
Field Component:
This role, while based in the Kilifi town office, will have a field component – which can be challenging but highly rewarding. This work will involve: long, dirty and uncomfortable bus/motorcycle rides, basic rustic facilities, work in areas far from any infrastructure (stores, electricity, paved roads), hours spent outside in the equatorial sun and heat. KOMAZA will soon commence construction on its first dedicated field operations office in Ganze, which will facilitate any fieldwork.
