Kenya: Consultant – Strengthening Girls and Boys Clubs


Contract Term : January 2016 – December 2016 ( Up to 10 days per month – a maximum of 120 days in the course of the consultancy)


NATURE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION

WUSC is working in partnership with Windle Trust Kenya (WTK) to implement the Kenya Equity in Education Project (KEEP)which will improve retention and performance of marginalised girls in primary and secondary school in northern Kenya. KEEP will build and strengthen girls’, boys’ and other clubs in project schools to provide non- academic opportunities and exposure for girls and boys to learn new skills. The goal of these clubs is learning, empowerment, strengthening motivation and sense of community at school. Through these clubs, KEEP aims to encourage girls and boys to advocate in favor of the right of girls to enroll and remain in school, fully participate in educational activities and improve girls’ classroom performance.


General Duties


The KEEP works with 89 boys and girls clubs at KEEP-supported schools. The KEEP Clubs approach is a youth-lead engagement model, which seeks to engage youth members and promote leadership skills and personal development. In general, the Clubs Program Consultant will act as the KEEP’s program point person for all Clubs-related activities in Kenya. The scope of duties includes program support, facilitation of training and development, results analysis, progress and process monitoring, coordination, and documentation/administration.


Program Support


· Provide support to Clubs patrons and members, ensuring that the KEEP Clubs program goal and purpose are maintained, and results are achieved


· Ensure that the Clubs approach and overall purpose is adhered to.


· Review and assess club activities against the principles of youth-participation and gender equity.


· Provide quality control on the development and implementation of KEEP Clubs activities to ensure Clubs concepts and youth-lead engagement concepts are reinforced


· Design, coordinate, and facilitate training activities for staff, Clubs patrons and/or members as needed


Monitoring


· Monitor Clubs regular meetings and provide support to patrons/members on best practice for meetings and youth-led project/activity planning


· Collect and analyze KEEP Clubs M&E tracking booklets


· Monitor the implementation of Clubs Activity Fund projects, including timely distribution and appropriate use of in-kind support


Management and Coordination


· Plan and coordinate specific Activity Fund proposals with Clubs patrons and members, ensuring that proposals awarded meet KEEP criteria of strengthening support to girl’s education


· Oversee and coordinate the Activity Fund cycle – three awards cycles per year


· Manage the quality of project proposals awarded through the AF, providing technical


support to Clubs in developing proposals as needed


· Coordinate the Activity Fund application and review processes


· Provide support to Clubs as they implement projects


Reporting, Documentation and Administration


· Document Clubs’ planned projects and capture results achieved awarded under the Activity Fund


Qualifications/Skills


· Master’s degree in international development, education, social sciences or other relevant studies, plus at least 5 years of work in the area of youth engagement and community development


· Experience working with refugees in Kenya, or other marginalized groups, preferably youth groups


· Familiar with results-based programming concepts and tools


· Excellent oral and written Swahili and English skills required


· Ability to analyze programs and results using a gender lens


· Strong understanding of youth-participation and youth-engagement principles. Direct experience working with youth engagement programs and Girls’ and Boys’ Clubs preferred


· Training, facilitation and workshop organization skills
