Job Title: Research Assistant (Western Region)
Reporting to the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, this role plays a crucial part in the STEP UP study on post-abortion family planning uptake in social franchise clinics.
The Research Assistant will be based at a selected AMUA clinic and will be responsible for data collection on the ongoing research study for a period of six months.
Location: AMUA clinic in Western Region
Reporting to: M&E Officer
Probationary Period: 3 months
The primary responsibility of this role is to further our Goal: THE PREVENTION OF UNWANTED BIRTHS and its mission of ensuring the individuals right to: CHILDREN BY CHOICE NOT CHANCE

Key Responsibilities:
- Develop full understanding of the study and be an ambassador for the study during data collection
- Conduct interviews with clients receiving a safe abortion service at AMUA clinics, and AMUA providers, following the protocol and all ethical procedures
- Carry out any other duties as may be directed by the immediate supervisor
Measures
- Successful completion of training
- Submission of completed questionnaires and informed consent forms
Develop full understanding of the study and be an ambassador for the study during data collection
Activities include:
- Develop understanding of the research protocol, the study population and the study tools
- Attend training conducted by Marie Stopes Kenya on the study procedures
- Provide information about the study to research participants and answer all questions the participant may have
Measures
- Successful completion of the training
- Monitoring of performance by social franchise co-ordinators, M&E officer.
Conduct structured interviews with clients, following all ethical procedures
Activities include:
- Identify potential respondents to interview, by being based full-time at an AMUA clinic and keeping up a rapport with the AMUA service provider
- Ensure proper screening of clients for study eligibility before recruitment of the client into the study and ensure that the participants give informed consent before taking part in the study
- Ensure that the privacy & confidentiality of the participants is maintained and observe all ethical issues during and after the research.
- Collect data through structured interviews and in-depth interviews with the sampled clients and service providers using a pre- developed questionnaires and interview guides.
- Ensure that all the questionnaires and research questions are accurately filled during the interview and also the qualitative questions are clearly documented and field notes are neatly kept.
Measures
- Submission of completed questionnaires and informed consent forms
- Phone follow up with clients to ensure that they were interviewed & consent procedure was followed.
- Questionnaires are securely stored and transported.
- Monitoring of performance by social franchise co-ordinators, M&E officer.

Knowledge, skills and attitudes
Qualifications:
- Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery or Nursing from a recognised medical training college, with higher diploma in Anaesthesia
- Registered by the Kenya Clinical Officers Council and in possession a valid practice license.
- Practising knowledge of Sexual Reproductive Health is an added advantage
Skills:
- Degree in social sciences or health sciences, or a certificate or diploma qualifications and extensive experience in social science research.
- Experience in conducting interviews in clinical settings especially on issues of sexual and reproductive health
- Experience following informed consent procedures
- Experience in conducting qualitative and quantitative study interviews
- Experience of data entry and transcription
- High regard for confidentiality and demonstrable integrity
- Excellent communicator – both written and spoken
- High level of attention to detail
- Ability to work flexibly to meet service needs
