Project Description
Tanager is implementing The Impacting Gender & Nutrition through Innovative Technical Exchange in Agriculture (IGNITE) mechanism, a five-year investment implemented by Tanager to improve household nutrition and women’s empowerment by strengthening African institutions’ ability to integrate nutrition and gender into their way of doing business and their agriculture interventions.
IGNITE works with African institutions to design, implement, and evaluate nutrition-sensitive and gender-integrated agriculture interventions.
IGNITE will also strengthen the ability of African institutions to incorporate nutrition and gender equality into their policy priorities and business practices—their way of doing business.
Based on the interventions implemented by IGNITE clients, IGNITE will identify key mechanisms and drivers of demand for the scale up and replication of nutrition-sensitive and gender-integrated interventions.
IGNITE activities will be targeted in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Tanzania. Current project clients include NGOs, private sector companies, and government bodies working in agriculture.
Position Summary
Tanager is seeking for a Research Associate to support in various research activities including data analysis, editing and review of research reports and supporting dissemination activities.
A suitable candidate should be an individual with a background in Agriculture research with crosscutting knowledge of gender and nutrition.
While contributing to varied research assignments in the context of Agriculture, Gender, and Nutrition across different countries of Africa, this position will be based in the Tanager office in Nairobi, Kenya.
The position will report to the Research Manager.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Work with the IGNITE research team and Technical Experts in the implementation of research activities proposed in the IGNITE Learning agenda and subsequent work plans.
· Work in liaison with the IGNITE Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Manager by supporting MEL related surveys.
· Support the research activities of IGNITE, where applicable, to undertake specific roles within the research cycle including literature reviews, development of tools, data collection, data analysis, and report writing.
· Work with the Research Manager in the execution of research dissemination activities.
Qualifications
· A master’s degree in Agriculture related field or Social Sciences. This includes Nutrition, Gender, Statistics, or other related fields.
· At least 2-3 years of research experience in a project focusing on either gender and/or nutrition in agriculture. This should include some exposure to designing research questions, developing sampling plans), developing research tools (for either qualitative or quantitative studies), and firsthand experience in data collection processes.
· Experience conducting research with leading gender methodologies (e.g., WEIA, pro-WEAI, time use studies, gender analyses, surveys looking at household decision-making) will be an added advantage.
· Proficiency in any of the data analysis tools like Stata, NVivo, SPSS, Open Data Kit (ODK) or an ODK-based platform such as SurveyCTO, is essential
· Understanding of basic agricultural development, extension, market systems approach as an underlying framework for gender and nutrition is highly recommended.
· Advanced computer skills in a Windows based environment including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel and other relevant research and analytical programs
· Fluency in English written and oral, required, French is an added advantage
