Overview:
The Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to strengthening integrated health systems in the developing world and expanding access to care and treatment for HIV/AIDS malaria other diseases. Based on the premise that business oriented strategy can facilitate solutions to global health challenges, CHAI acts as a catalyst to mobilize new resources and optimize the impact of these resources to save lives, via improved organization of commodity markets and more effective national and sub-national level management. By working in association with governments and other NGO partners, CHAI is focused on large scale impact and, to date, CHAI has secured lower pricing agreements for treatment options in more than 70 countries. In addition, CHAI’s teams are working side-by-side with over 25 governments to tackle many of the largest health system barriers to effective care and treatment.
Last year, CHAI launched a new program to apply the techniques it has used successfully to improve access to HIV/AIDS and malaria treatment in developing countries to essential vaccines, one of the most cost-effective public health interventions. CHAI’s Vaccine Program seeks to increase the speed and efficiency with which new vaccines are introduced and reach scale in developing countries. The program specifically focuses on the introduction of two new vaccines against rotavirus and pneumococcal disease in four focus countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi and Nigeria. Rotavirus and pneumococcal disease currently kill approximately 800,000 children each year, with 80% of these deaths occurring in the developing world. CHAI’s vaccines program works with Ministries of Health and other immunization partners to help prepare and implement the introduction of new vaccines and to drive interventions that transform the efficiency with which new and existing vaccines are delivered
