Position: Advocacy Officer
Department: Advocacy & Communications (A&C)
Duty Station: Nairobi – Kenya
Contract Duration: 1 year with possibility of renewal
Background: DSW (Deutsche Stiftung Weltbevoelkerung) is an international development and advocacy organisation, which focuses on achieving universal access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).
DSW’s mission is to empower young people and communities in low and middle-income countries by addressing the issues of population dynamics and health as a way to achieve sustainable development.
In addition to its head office in Hannover, DSW maintains offices in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda and liaison offices in Berlin and Brussels.
We also work with partners in other countries in Africa and South Asia.
Overall Goal: To support in the effective implementation of regional advocacy programmes in line with internal and donor requirements and conditions.
Specific Responsibilities
The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
- Ensure effective implementation and follow up of advocacy strategies and work plans to ensure activities are implemented as per set timelines, budgets and quality;
- Collect country level inputs and compile monthly and annual progress reports for submission to the donor;
- Assist in development of frameworks, tools and support for research, policy and budget analyses and annual reviews to support advocacy implementation and reporting;
- Participate in the synthesis of research findings and recommendations into compelling advocacy strategies and communication materials;
- Contribute to program activities by organizing workshops and meetings, making travel and hotel bookings, sending invitations and preparing materials;
- Support the liaison between DSW EU office and DSW Country offices in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda;
- Support the development of an advocacy strategy for each of the partner countries supportive of EU funding and better policies for FP and related issues
- Contribute to building the capacity of staff and partner CSOs on engaging with and advocating towards EU delegations;
- Support country offices in the engagement with European Union Delegations;
- Monitor developments in EU policy in the target countries and in a timely manner inform national advocacy officers of key advocacy moments;
- Assist in the drafting of consultancy contracts, process consultants’ expense reports, and coordinate consultants’ logistical needs;
- Undertake communication and correspondence under the guidance of the Advocacy Manager;
- Contribute effectively to planning, monitoring, reporting and information dissemination of project outcomes/impact and DSW’s work;
- Ensure documentation and archiving of project documents digitally as well in hard copy and regularly updated;
- Undertake any other tasks as may be assigned by the Supervisor.
Core Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, development studies, communication or relevant fields
- At least three years’ working experience related to the listed responsibilities particularly advocacy, family planning/sexual and reproductive health, reporting
- Basic knowledge of the European Union development policy-making processes required, experience in liaising with the EU delegation (desirable)
- Excellent written and spoken skills in English
- Good working knowledge of French desirable
- Excellent proof reading and reporting skills with a keen attention to detail
- Good knowledge of research methodologies, analysis and reporting
- Strong computer and typing skills and use of database and internet
- Very good organizational skills
