FAO-Somalia Agronomist Job in Dollow, Somalia

Position Title: Agronomist



Grade Level: SC 9   
 



Contract Type: Service Contract   



Duty Station: Dollow, Somalia   
 



Organizational Unit: FAO-Somalia

Duration: 12 months with possibility of extension





Eligible Candidates: Somali nationals only


 


Anticipated start date: Immediately   

Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in Somalia, the Agriculture Sector Coordinator and the direct supervision of the Agriculture Emergency Programme Coordinator/ Head of Dollow Office, the Agronomist will be responsible for the following tasks:





Key responsibilities


  • Take lead in the establishment and capacity building of Farmer Field Schools; Farmer Associations / Groups / Canal Committees

  • Train farmers on water use and management; good agronomic practices. Conservation agriculture, human and animal traction techniques for land preparation, proper use of agricultural inputs and operation and maintenance of project infrastructures (i.e. canals, irrigation pumps, produce stores etc.);

  • Organize and develop (if required) training materials to be used for training project beneficiaries;

  • support drafting of contracts and letters of agreement to be issued for services providers;

  • Collaborate with implementing partners on the training of farmers on good agronomic practices,

  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders in establishment/strengthening of necessary channels for sustainable dissemination of agricultural knowledge;

  • Monitor the progress of trainees at regular intervals so that the quality of training is maintained;

  • Monitor the implementation of letters of agreement against work plans

  • Provide support in preparing monthly progress reports, indicating major achievements, constraints and recommendations;

  • Provide support in preparing required reports describing activities, implementation constraints, impact, conclusions and recommendations at end of project period;

  • Report any challenges or constraints in a timely manner and ensure timely and effective response;

  • Travel regularly to project sites keeping compliance to prevailing security regulations;

  • Perform any other duty and activity upon instructions of the Agriculture Emergency Programme Coordinator/ Head of Dollow Office, Agriculture Sector Coordinator or the FAO Representative in  Somalia


Minimum Requirements

Education: Minimum of Bachelors degree in Agriculture, Agriculture extension and development or any other agricultural sciences related degree.


Work Experience: At least 6 years of relevant experience with UN-agencies or NGOs in Somalia and the region.
 
Languages: Working knowledge (level C) of the FAO official language used for communication within the country (English, French or Spanish) and working knowledge of the local language(s) is required.


IT Skills: Ability to effectively use standard office software, such as MS Office (Windows, Word, Outlook, Excel, Exchange) etc.


Interpersonal Communications and Teamwork Skills:



  • The incumbent must possess a cooperative spirit, flexibility and openness to work in an international environment. 

  • Tact and courtesy. 

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people of different national and cultural background.
