Background: OGRA Foundation is a tax-exempt Kenyan Non-governmental Organization registered in 2004. It is one of Western Kenya’s leading Non-Governmental Organizations active in 4 counties, namely Kisumu, Vihiga, Siaya and Homa-bay.
OGRA Foundation in partnership with Coders Trust have started a partnership and journey of “Skilling for Self-Employment”.
This project will focus on training youth who are in the rural areas “surviving” who never had a chance at doing something with their degrees and hence have had no shot at their careers.
The 6-month skilling programs involves training these youth in computer coding and further up skilling them on the exact work ethics and delivery expected by Coders Trust Project Providers.
Coders Trust has had a success story in this kind of intervention in both India and Bangladesh. Kenya is the first African country to benefit from this initiative.
OGRA Foundation is privileged to be the lead partner in Kenya to implement this exciting opportunity for the youth.
The Beneficiaries will be awarded ICT projects from an online Portal, which will be paid per project.
As they progress through the projects learning and doing paid homework, they will be able to earn much needed forex which will prepare them on how to set up and run their own independent project-contracting ICT firms, which will in turn employ other youth.
We expect that each of the beneficiaries will be financed through our partners with seed capital to open small computer firms which will provide Apps and other ICT services to the informal sector and spur the growth of SME’s.
The program is piloting with 100 students this March 2016 and will rapidly expand to 2,000 students in its second cohort in Kenya, following the success of the pilot project.
