Kenya: Video Documentary for the ‘Promoting Durable solutions and Livelihoods Support for IDPs in Galkayo’ Project

Organization: International Labour Organization

Country: Kenya

Closing date: 06 Jul 2016

Background

ILO and UNHCR seek to provide livelihoods opportunities for IDPs in Halabokat, Salama and Tawakal settlements located in north Galkayo. The high demand and limited livelihood opportunities are a potential cause of conflict between the IDPs and the host communities undermining peace and peace building initiatives and hindering successful local integration. The objective of this project is to increase the access of income of this group while at the same time enhancing peaceful co-existence.

The project also addresses the livelihood gaps identified in the livelihoods needs assessment conducted within the IDP settlements, particularly the need to build entrepreneurial/business skills, access for start-up grants and business support services. The overall objective of the project is therefore to create viable employment-based reintegration livelihood opportunities for Galkayo IDPs and vulnerable groups of the host community. The project complements UNHCR’s support for promoting durable solutions programme to end displacement especially for protracted IDPs, this project improves and promotes durable solutions and livelihoods support for IDPs in Galkayo- Somalia. The project is also building on ILO’s recently completed European Union funded project of “Improvement of Livelihoods of Vulnerable Households in Urban/Peri-Urban areas of Galkayo” which supported livelihoods and whose beneficiaries included IDPs.

The project is providing the below vocational skills to the beneficiaries:

  • Carpentry skills
