Eastern Africa Cluster is looking for a highly-motivated candidate to lead its Trade and Marketing department based in Nairobi, Kenya. Eastern Africa Cluster is one of the leading Clusters within the sub-Saharan Africa Region in terms of business impact, containing three of the most dynamic African economies, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania and key ports central to our profitable Eastern Africa network.
The Cluster comprises of 11 countries (active in 10 of these, excluding Eritrea): Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Somalia and Eritrea.

As a pivotal member within Eastern Africa leadership team, the Cluster Trade & Marketing Manager will primarily be accountable for delivery and optimisation of yield and volume and will act as the key focal for the Cluster Top, Various key Centre functions (Trades, Revenue Management and Marketing), the Sales responsible in the Cluster for both brands as well as the Liner Operations Centre (LOC)/ Uptake Management (UTM) functions. S/he will also be the strategic and tactical sparring partner on pricing, business development, market feedback and key marketing activities.
Leading a small team, the Cluster Trade & Marketing Manager will manage the development of relevant, timely and high-impact campaigns, initiatives and sales materials to support sales target achievement. S/he will work with Centre Trades to establish cost-effective and commercial-competitive products in consideration of mother vessel and feeder network opportunities. In addition, s/he will build and communicate local market intelligence to realise cluster business plans as well as the global and cluster marketing objectives in Eastern Africa.

In this role, the Cluster T&M Manager will further their strategic, people management and leadership capabilities. S/he will gain thorough understanding of the market and customer drivers, trade and product knowledge as well as experience how to drive a performance culture. This will result in their understanding of how to best generate profit for Maersk Line and Safmarine.
Cluster Trade & Marketing Manager Job Responsibilities
- Adopt and communicate trade strategy to the cluster and enhance execution.
- Translate string strategy into cluster short- and long-term business plans.
- Provide guidance to local commercial strategy through market, trade and customer segment analysis.
- Provide guidance to local capacity management.
- Identify business opportunities in both short- and long-term based on market feedback and intelligence.
- Give input to deployment changes and establish a cost-effective and commercial- competitive feeder network for the cluster.
- Drive customer satisfaction survey process in terms of owning the nomination process, developing and implementing action plans in cooperation with other functions and be the focal point to CEN Customer Needs.
- Support yield and volume generation via new leads generation and campaign launches.
- Ensure communication in the cluster supports internal and external stakeholders across all communication channels as well as strengthens ‘our name’ in the market place.
Requirements for the Cluster Trade & Marketing Manager Job
- Bachelor degree or above.
- Minimum 8 years’ work experience with solid and in-depth knowledge in commercial.
- Good network with CEN, region, clusters and LOC.
- Good product (deployment) knowledge.
- Good strategic agility/vision – able to set short- and long-term strategy and translate it into actions and achievements.
- Able to play an integral part of the business decision-making process and help Maersk Line achieve and maintain competitive leadership.
- Able to identify competitive trends and provide recommendations to realize growth and the strategic plans.
- Experience with communication and marketing disciplines. Can embed knowledge into strategic and tactical annual market plans.
- Able to structure, conduct and facilitate analytical problem solving. Manages complex situations in an effective manner.
- Excellent leadership and influencing skills.
- Good team player with excellent people and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong result orientation to stay focused on set goals and results.
- Good verbal, written and presentation skills in English.
