1. Background Information
The intern will be placed at the Project Development and Implementation Unit in Nairobi.
The primary function of the Project Development and Implementation Unit (PDIU) is to enhance the functions of the Mission with Regional Function (MRF) Nairobi through project / programme development and implementation and effective coordination with IOM field missions within the East and Central African Region.
2. Objective of the assignment
Working directly under the guidance and supervision of the Regional Programme Development Officer, the intern will provide technical assistance and facilitation in the development and design of new projects / programmes to be implemented in the countries of MRF Nairobi’s scope.
The Intern assignments will include:
- Consult all relevant documents on IOM project / programme development and implementation.
- Familiarize him/her self with IOM service areas and read the major guiding documents for each area as well as examples of projects implemented under each area. In particular focus on irregular migration, labor migration, migration management, migration and development, assisted voluntary return etc.
- Under the guidance of the RPDO Conduct a desk study including a review of ICGLR, EAC, IGAD documents and individual government policy papers in the region on topics related to IOM areas of interest.
- Locate and study major donors’ country and regional strategy papers;
- Under the guidance of the RPDO search for and study thoroughly available funding opportunities for future IOM project development in the region,.
- Accompany the RPDO in meetings potential donors.
- Assist the RPDO in identifying and contacting potential partners among civil society, governments, regional organizations and international organizations and accompany the RPDO in meeting these potential partners.
- Attend working groups meetings.
- Assist the RPDO to identify potential programmes and formulate project proposals in the relevant IOM service areas by conducting background research and preparing initial drafts following instructions from the RPDO and according to required formats.
- As needed draft Internal and external reports and assist the PDIU (unit) in responding to requests for information from HQ, other missions or others.
Outputs:
- A desk study including a review of ICGLR, EAC, IGAD documents and individual government policy papers in the region on topics related to IOM areas of interest
- Updated presentations on IOM activities in the region
- Virtual PDIU library covering activities in the region as well as other relevant information for present or future projects
- Mapping of donors and preparation of a database with relevant additional info
- Draft MRF strategy for the region in accordance to internal discussions between RR, PDIU and other relevant MRF officers
- At least one full project proposal developed by the intern from A to Z (under RPDO and PDIU staff supervision)
Personal development:
Acquire technical knowledge in the area o project development, including identification of programme needs and funding opportunities, drafting of project proposal, communication and liaison with partner organizations, UN agencies and government officials, donor relations as well as familiarity and understanding of thematic migration issues (in line with IOM service areas). Finally the intern will experience working in an international multi cultural environment, with a humanitarian intergovernmental organization.
5. Qualifications
- A master degree in political/social sciences in a relevant field (development studies, international relations etc.)
- Familiarity with the political and general situation in the region an advantage.
- Past work experience in east or central Africa – an advantage.
- Proven experience writing and editing technical documents.
- Excellent written and spoken English (preferably at mother tongue level).
- Knowledge of French a major advantage.
- Working or volunteering experience with a humanitarian organization an advantage.
- Working knowledge of MS Office and Internet applications.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Access and Powerpoint.
