Position: School Nurse

As part of the staff at Nova and in line with the culture and values of Nova, the School Nurse will be in charge of the infirmary/ school clinic, handling cases whose symptoms and causes can be conclusively treated on campus. The holder of this post will also be responsible for general housekeeping. A registered nurse, he/she shall be resident on the school campus.

Responsibilities

• The post holder will have access to and be responsible for confidential situations, information and documentation.  The Nurse must ensure confidential or sensitive material is handled appropriately and accurately in accordance with the standards required of a clinician.  


• Communicate effectively at all levels with students, staff, parents and other clinicians and paramedics, in both English and Kiswahili.


• Professional, flexible, conscientious, and able to act with discretion at all times.


• Able to work upon your own initiative in a calm and patient manner.


• Able to demonstrate a genuine empathy, warmth and interest in the students in the Matron’s care.


• An effective and harmonious part of, an energetic, cohesive, hardworking team.


• Professional counselling skills with a proven track record will be an advantage.


• Stay on campus during nominated hours of duty.


• Reside in official accommodation during silent hours and respond to calls/alarms in line with protocols.


• Attend care meetings where required and support pupils’ emotional, cultural and intellectual development. In this regard, the Nurse shall be a member of the Health and Safety Committee.


• Inspect boarding house facilities (toilets and bathrooms, laundry area) when pupils are away from the facilities and appraise the level of hygiene and cleanliness.


• Monitor standards achieved by cleaners and other support agencies within the Boarding House and report on any deficiencies to the Director, Operations.


• Provide first aid, initial medical support and administration of medicines to students in line with the laid out protocols.


• Attend appropriate ‘updating’ training sessions and refresher courses as may be offered/ required by the government or recommended by the management of Nova Academies.


• Assist House staff and teachers in facilitating the learning and practice of good manners, etiquette and courtesy.


• Set an exemplary personal standard of dress, behaviour and personal hygiene.


• Help to supervise official laundry services and pupils’ own laundry activities.


• Report repairs required in the house maintenance log for onward transmission to the Director, Operations


• Maintain close liaison with the Medical staff at the nearest Private Hospital consistently


• Undertake the equivalent of four days of Continual Professional Development training per Academic Year.


• Participate in a programme of continual risk assessment within the house as required by Health and Safety guidelines


• Undertake such other duties as the Principal or Director, Operations may reasonably require.
