Job Type / Length: Full-time / Ongoing

Job Location: Isiolo / Nairobi, Kenya (some travel within Kenya, regionally and internationally)

WelTel is an international organization and a leader in global, mobile health (mHealth), committed to providing evidence-based, health solutions, through the use of innovative, mobile technology in the management of HIV/AIDS, TB, Asthma, other chronic diseases, as well as a focus on maternal and child health.

Harnessing the worldwide expansion of cell phone use and text messaging via SMS, WelTel has developed a unique software platform to improve patient care.

The WelTel intervention and service provides clinicians with a user-friendly, computer/tablet or mobile phone interface and workflow to interact with patients through SMS and has been shown to significantly improve HIV outcomes, including medication adherence and viral suppression and is currently being tested in a variety of other conditions with preliminary data showing its value in many other settings. 

WelTel research papers have been published in top medical and scientific journals such as the Lancet, Nature, the Economist and Scientific American.

Job Description: WelTel is seeking a full-time, proactive, organized and highly skilled lead programmer to join the team in Isiolo Kenya, to help support and grow the WelTel platform through new features and enhancements. 

WelTel is a growing organization and is looking for someone who can grow with us. Good candidates will be enthusiastic about web technologies, sustainable scalability, data efficiency, code quality and be capable of working on diverse aspects of the intervention. 

They will have a good sense of efficient user interface design, debugging and will be able to work effectively in a distributed team environment.

General Technical

• Experience with text messaging gateways/modems:  Gammu, Ozeki and Diafaan


• Proficient in Javascript/Node, PHP and JQuery


• Good understanding of MySQL administration/tuning, including indexes and cascading


• Some experience with database schema design


• Proficient in HTML and CSS


• Some understanding of software architecture patterns especially MVC


• Demonstrated experience working with HTTP protocol and developing Restful APIs


• Implementing instructional programs in ICT: Security, data analysis and monitoring


• System administration, support of hardware and software technical issues to users


• Operating systems: Windows Linux


• Create and maintain software documentation

Candidates with below requirements will be given preference;

 
Server Side Development

• Strong knowledge of asynchronous programming and Promises/Futures


• Experience in Node.js and npm or server sidescripting language like Ruby/Python


• Experience with the following packages: Lodash (Underscore), Express, Knex, Bookshelf, Gulp, Winston, Bluebird


• Familiarity with testing frameworks (Mocha, Chai, Sinon) would be an asset

Client Side Development

• Strong knowledge of Angular. js or similar frameworks (Ember, React, etc.)


• Experience testing and debugging frameworks


• Understanding of the concept of dependency injection/inversion of   control


• Experience with SASS/Compass


• Sufficient experience with Ruby/Java to troubleshoot


• Basic understanding of UI/UX concepts


• Awareness of responsive design issues (mobile-friendly)

Education and Experience

• A bachelor degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or any other related.


• Minimum of two years of work experience.
