Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has been present in Somalia since early 2004 and has since expanded its Horn of Africa Programme to Kenya in 2006 and to Ethiopia in 2011. 



Since 2004, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has demonstrated a regional competence and expertise in working with displaced populations.




The Regional Office is based in Nairobi, Kenya with offices and operations in Somalia (Puntland, Somaliland and Mogadishu), Kenya (Dadaab and Kakuma ), Ethiopia (Addis Ababa, Dolo Ado, Shire,Gambella and Asosa), South Sudan (Juba, Awil, Alek and Aweril) and Yemen (Sa’naa and Aden).

The NRC Horn of Africa & Yemen mission is an expanding programme. NRC started its operations in Kenya in the refugee camps in Dadaab in February 2007. 




NRC has WASH, Shelter, Education, Food Security and Livelihood and Information Counseling and Legal Assistant programmes implemented in the refugee camps in Dadaab. 



NRC is seeking to recruit WASH Assistant – Plant Mechanic.



The Plant Mechanic will be responsible for following up of Water Sources / Production activities at the Hagadera and Kambioos camps. 



He will manage the water sources/production task under the direct guidance of the WASH Officer – Water Supply and Overall supervision of WASH Project Coordinator.

Job Description



  • Prepare regular reports on the boreholes yields, daily production, fuel consumption and running hours of the generators.

  • Servicing and preventive maintenance on all the boreholes and compound generators including minor and major overhauls.

  • Ensure operation and maintenance of the hybrid solar and diesel water pumping systems at the boreholes in Hagadera camp

  • Observe occupational safety standards in the workshop and other areas of work and ensure proper arrangement of the equipment and tools in the workshop.

  • Maintenance of workshop cleanliness and safety and ensure proper arrangement of the equipment and plants in the workshop.

  • Keep records of all the repairs that have been done at the field and in the workshop as well the running hours of the generators to ensure timely servicing.

  • Keep records of all generators fuel consumption and amount of water produced.

  • Keep records on all the spares which have been used in the workshop and at the field.

  • Prepare monthly reports on jobs and conditions of all the relevant system facilities.

  • Support the WASH Officer – Water supply in procurement of the necessary fast moving spare parts, and working tools for the repair and maintenance of the generators and pumps.

  • To participate in recruitment of boreholes attendants and operators and ensure they are well trained.

  • Collaborate with other agencies’ staffs working in the camps.

  • Any other assignment as may be required by WASH Officer – Water supply.


Qualifications


  • Technical background mechanical Engineering with a minimum of National Diploma in mechanical engineering (plant option) or similar relevant discipline. 

  • Additional knowledge/experience in electrical works and solar energy systems O & M will be an added advantage.

  • 5 years proven experience in operation and maintenance of diesel-run generators in a busy workshop or institution including undertaking engine overhauls, assembling and frequency adjustments to suit the submersible pump current requirements.

  • Extensive in borehole equipping, retrieval and installation of submersible pumps, knowledge in bore drilling/development is an added advantage.

  • Experience of working with INGO in a similar capacity will be an added advantage.


Education field: Mechanical engineering

Education level: Academy college / University


Personal qualities



  • Excellent communication (spoken and written) skills, including the ability to explain and present technical information

  • Experience in capacity building and training of staff and target groups

  • Political and cultural awareness and experience of working where insecurity is a major issue

  • Language: Fluency in written and spoken English is essential; fluency in Kiswahili is highly desirable.
