Position: Assistant Cook
As the Assistant Cook you will play a critical role in preparing for and cooking 3 course meals for both students and staff.

Your role is currently based at our Nova Ondiri campus in Kikuyu Township
Reports To: Principal
Responsibilities
- Living the Nova Culture
- Assists in the preparation of foods in accordance with Nova Academy’s Food Service Policy, Menus and Recipes.
- Prepare and cook foods of all types on a regular basis including meals for students on special diets
- Assists with planning meals far enough ahead to minimize the need for food substitutions; when substitutions are necessary helps to serve food of equivalent nutritional value.
- Assists in preparing meals and snacks in such a way that a minimum of nutrients are lost from foods, that ensure foods taste good and look appealing, and that there is ample amount of food for students.
- Helps to maintain established standards of sanitation, safety and food preparation and storage as set by the local and state health departments, including: storing foodstuffs and supplies in appropriate areas; washing dishes; cleaning refrigerators, stove, bins, cupboards and other kitchen equipment and utensils; and, sweeping and mopping kitchen floors.
- Substitutes for the Cook in her/his absence.
- Helps modify menus and recipes and prepare foods to meet the developmental needs of students and the medical and feeding needs of students with food allergies.
- Helps deliver foods from the kitchen to the dining hall and preparing and packing food for students’ field trips.
- Attends and participates in sponsored trainings, pre-service and in-service trainings, and other continuing education, career and professional development opportunities.
- Participates in the school’s self-evaluation process and complies with any applicable Program Improvement Plans developed.
- Participates in general staff meetings and other meetings and events planned by the Nova
- Participates in all emergency drills and environmental safety activities.
- Performs other duties, as assigned.

- Sensitive Palate – Be able to explore various combinations of menus and make them work cost-effectively

- Teamwork – Must be able to work very effectively with others
- Determination –The assistant cook needs to be prepared to work hard.
- This job, in addition to working early mornings and late evenings will also require working weekends and long hours on your feet.
- Organization & Cleanliness – Be able to bring all the elements of a meal together quickly and efficiently. Be able to plan ahead, keep a cool head in a high-pressure kitchen environment. Be able to keep an extremely organized and clean kitchen.
Qualifications
- A hospitality Certificate or Diploma in food production or similar.
- Any additional training/certificates- e.g. ISO, HACAP will be an added advantage
- Minimum experience of 3+ years and partly as an institutional cook
- Current Medical Certificate
- 3 STRONG references in the specified field
