About the Role
You will work as part of the Connected Women and Connected Society Market Engagement teams to drive forward market engagements in Africa, helping cultivate and support a portfolio of mobile operators and partners across Africa who are interested in closing the gender gap in mobile internet and mobile money, and/or driving mobile internet adoption and use to the underserved more generally, including women, rural populations and persons with disabilities.
Key roles and responsibilities include the following:
- Make recommendations for the strategic direction for the Connected Women and Connected Society Market Engagement team in Africa and taking a leading role in ensuring the delivery of that strategy. You will also input to the strategic direction of the Connected Women and Connected Society teams as a whole, based on your close relationships and clear understanding of mobile operator’s changing business needs.
- Support a portfolio of mobile operators and other partners across Africa who are interested in closing the gender gap in mobile internet and mobile money, and/or driving mobile internet adoption and use to the underserved more generally, including rural populations and persons with disabilities.
- Provide thought leadership, analysing market opportunities, inputting to the design of (but not limited to) mobile internet and mobile money propositions, as well as handset affordability and digital skills initiatives.
- Create and deliver strategy workshops for operators; support the launch and scale of existing initiatives and tracking and reporting on both commercial and social outcomes.
- Engaging and managing relevant stakeholders in Africa including engaging cross functionally within mobile operator teams, helping to drive action.
- Keeping up to speed with trend data and the barriers and opportunities for driving digital inclusion for underserved communities in Africa as well as a more granular view of the impact of current initiatives to close the gaps and use this in your work.
- Document insights and learnings and share your findings with the industry ecosystem. This will include collaborating with the insights team to generate insights from mobile
- operator and other partner engagements, and disseminate these through presentations, case studies, toolkits, blogs, events and meetings with relevant stakeholders.
We welcome applications from professionals with the following demonstrated qualifications:
- Very strong commercial experience is a must have. This may be gained through working as a management consultant or within corporate strategy, business planning or marketing functions, ideally within (or for) the telecoms industry.
- Strategic and analytical capabilities in understanding and assessing new business models, including experience identifying commercial opportunities and their potential impact when successfully scaled.
- Familiarity with reaching undeserved populations, including women, in low- and middle-income countries is a must have. Ideally this would be through experience in the mobile for development sector and/or working with mobile operators in emerging markets
- Strong and compelling written and oral communication skills in the English language are essential, with the ability to express complex or commercial issues articulately, concisely and persuasively.
- Strong interpersonal, relationship-building and public speaking skills, in order to develop constructive relationships with diverse stakeholders with an emphasis on mobile network operators. Ideally candidates would have solid experience of C-suite level interactions.
- Experience working with a team across cultures and globally dispersed.
- Strong project management skills, ability to work independently, self-motivated, entrepreneurial and organised to deliver high impact outputs. Conscientious and creative with a can-do attitude.
