Capacity Building Coordinator


Since its inception in 1933, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) has been a global leader in emergency response and providing durable solutions for conflict- and crisis-affected populations. The IRC launched conflict mitigation and peace building initiatives in Kenya in the immediate aftermath of the post-election crisis, and has in addition initiated activities that support cross-border conflict management and peace building in the northern part of Kenya (Turkana and Pokot) and Karamoja region in Uganda.

IRC is currently preparing a proposal in response to a USAID/DCHA/CMM request for applications to support a people-to-people approach on conflict mitigation to deal with potential conflict emanating from upcoming and ongoing political processes and events in Kenya including the ICC process, the implementation of the new constitution and the upcoming general elections in 2012. The Capacity Building Coordinator will be responsible for a whole range of capacity building strategies and activities for IRC peace building programs, partners and community-based groups working with IRC on the People-to-People Peace Building Project. The Capacity Building Coordinator will be responsible for ensuring programmatic quality and adherence to best practice throughout project implementation.

*Position contingent upon award of contract.

Responsibilities:

Reports to the Project Director:-

• Develop relevant tools to undertake organizational capacity assessments for IRC and its People–to- People Peace Building Project partners.
• Develop, guide and track high quality organizational development and capacity building plans for IRC and partners undertaking the project.
• Under the guidance of the Project Director provide direction and planning and management of project capacity building needs and plans.
• Organize and lead capacity building activities including recruitment and management of capacity building consultants should the need arise.
• Provide mentorship to IRC and partners staff on peace building and conflict management.
• Under the direction of the Project Director supervise project staff members based within IRC
• Collaborate with project partners to ensure Capacity Building plans are followed.
• Together with the Project Director support advocacy efforts for policy and legislative changes relating to peace building and conflict management by IRC and its partners.
• Establish and maintain systems for monitoring and evaluating organizational development throughout the project time span.
• Maintain working relationships with partners and donors to enhance program integration and implementation.
• Preparing and submitting high quality progress and financial reports to the donor.
• Under the direction of the Project Director undertake representational duties with USAID, Kenyan government and other stakeholders.
• Participate in working group meetings, and other coordination mechanisms, at both the local, district, and national level.

Requirements:

• A Degree or higher in social work (MSW), humanities, international affairs, other related field.
• Three to five years of professional experience in organizational development and capacity building in supervisory roles implementing and overseeing complex programs in a humanitarian or development context.
• Experience in conflict, leadership, and peace programming at the local and national levels.
• Knowledge and/or experience of people-to-people approaches to peace building would be desirable.
• Exceptional gender, GBV, leadership, and other sector-specific technical skills and knowledge.
• Experience working and coordinating with government bodies and local actors in a complex and changing environment.
• Demonstrated skills and experience in complex Organizational Development and capacity building program design and monitoring.
• Analytical and strategic planning and implementation skills.
• Ability and interest to work with a diverse and multicultural team in a respectful and culturally appropriate manner.
• Fluency in spoken and written English, Swahili a plus.
