Kenya Industrial Research And Development Institute (KIRDI)
Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI) is a State Corporation, established under the Science and Technology Act, Chapter 250 of 1979, and operates under the Ministry of Industrialization. Its mandate is to carry out Research, Technology and Innovation (RTI) in industrial and allied technologies. The institute is expected to play a leading role in supporting the industrialization process in line with Vision 2030.
To achieve the above mandate, the Institute is seeking to recruit suitable, self-driven, result oriented, highly motivated and qualified personnel, to fill the following vacant positions:
1 Deputy Director, Finance, Human Resource And Administration (DD - F, HR & ADM) :

Grade: IR 11 (1 POST)
Reporting to the Director, the specific duties and responsibilities of the Deputy Director, Finance, Human Resources and Administration will involve:Coordinating the operations of Finance, Human Resource and AdministrationFormulation of human resource management and finance policies/functions and implementation of the samePreparation of corporate budgetOverseeing implementation of human resource management and finance policies and strategiesSetting up an effective accounting system following the prevailing Government accounting proceduresManaging and monitoring the institutes’ expenditure; and monitoring the institute’s payroll and staff  establishment among other Human Resource/Finance and Administrative duties.
For appointment to the Position of Deputy Director, Finance, Human Resources and Administration, one must:Have a Master’s degree in Social Sciences from a recognized institution and at least fifteen (15) years’ experience in the relevant field, five (5) of which must be in relevant senior management levelsBe computer literateHave undertaken a strategic management course lasting not less than six (6) weeks from a recognized institutionHave demonstrated managerial, administrative and professional competenceHave excellent communication skillsHave good interpersonal skillsBe a person of high integrityBe a team playerBe a strategic thinkerA PhD qualification in a relevant field will be an added advantage2. Assistant Director, Resource Mobilization (AD -RM):

Reporting to the Director, the Assistant Director, Resource Mobilization, will be responsible for:Developing a resource mobilization policy and strategyIdentifying research potential and funding opportunitiesPlanning and implementing research projects and other activities of the institute to attract fundingInitiating and developing consultancy servicesOrganizing seminars/short courses on Resource Mobilization related activitiesLiaising with the researchers for identifying research problems/gaps and disseminating research findingsEstablishing strategic partnerships and networksCarrying out any other duties that may be assigned
For appointment as the Assistant Director, Resource Mobilization, one must have:-Seven (7) years’ experience in Resource Mobilization, three (3) of which must be in a senior positionMasters of Science/Education in Applied Science/Masters of Business Administration in Entrepreneurship/Project Management/Masters of Arts – Economics or its equivalent from a recognized InstitutionPost graduate Diploma in Strategic/Project Management from a recognized institutionA Strategic Management course lasting not less than six (6) weeks from a recognized Institution, andComputer Application skills.3 Chief /Senior Principal/Principal/Research Scientists

3.1 Chief Research Scientist (CRS):

Grade: IR 12 (4 Posts):
Reporting to the Deputy Director, Research, Technology and Innovation (RTI), the duties and responsibilities as a Chief Research Scientist will include:Spearheading the formulation of the Institute’s and national research/scientific policies and strategiesPlanning and implementation of national industrial research agenda.Initiating collaborative research and linkages with other institutions; and leading research teams in developing innovative productsCarrying out collaborative research with industry and other relevant InstitutionsEvaluation and authentication of research projects for approvalPreparation of reports and technical/scientific publicationsEnforcing safe and healthy working procedures to ensure safety at workplace.Enforcing control measures and ethical practices to comply with the Anti-Corruption Act and other statutory requirementsProviding professional leadership and mentoring of research scientists in their area of specializationSupervision of the Institute’s scientists undertaking further studies; andCarrying out any other duties that may be assigned.
For appointment as a Chief Research Scientist, one must:-Have a PhD in any of the following fields; Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Ceramics and Building Materials, ICT, Food Technology, Energy, Environment, Project Studies, Leather or Textiles from a recognized Institution;Have proven experience of at least fifteen (15) years of uninterrupted research in a similar research institution of which five (5) must have been in Senior Principal Researcher or its equivalent;Be an author of at least eight (8) scientific publications in refereed journals OR relevant books (chapters) and one (1) verifiable technology/innovation which must have been packaged and disseminated;Be a first (Principal) author of three (3) grant-winning proposals in addition to at least one of the following achievements:-Be an author of a published book in a relevant field.Be an editor of a published book in a relevant field.Have attended a strategic management course lasting not less than six (6) weeks from a recognized Institution;Have a certificate in Project Management from a recognized Institution; andHave Computer Application skills.Have served as a Senior Principal Research Scientist for at least three (3) yearsHave a PhD degree in a relevant field from a recognized InstitutionHave proven experience and ability, which must include transfer of at least five (5) technologies/policy developmentHave authored at least six (6) scientific publications in refereed journals three (3) relevant book (chapters)Be the first author of two (2) grant-winning proposals in addition to at least one of the following achievements:-Be an author of a published book in a relevant field.Be an editor of a published book in a relevant fieldHave registered a patent/utility model of an invention or innovationHave attended a strategic leadership management course lasting not less than six (6) weeks from a recognized InstitutionHave a certificate in Project Management from a recognized institutionHave Computer Application skillsHave demonstrated a high degree of managerial and profession competencies as reflected in work performance and results, and Have demonstrated ability to translate National goals, policies and strategies into research programmes and projects.3.2 Senior Principal Research Scientist (SPRS)

Duties and responsibilities as a Senior Principal Research Scientist will include:Planning and implementing research programmesParticipating in the formulation of the Institute’s and national research/scientific policies and strategiesCo-ordinating relevant research programmesCarrying out critical evaluation of research projects at all stages of their implementation and review resource budgeting, utilization and managementIdentifying research innovations that have practical significance and devise strategies for their implementationInitiating collaborative research and linkages with other institutionsPreparation of reports and technical/scientific publicationsProviding training, nurturing and mentoring; and enforcing safe and healthy working procedures to ensure safety at workplaceEnforcing control measures and ethical practices to comply with the Anti-Corruption Act and other statutory requirementsSupervising and evaluating performance of research scientists working under him/her, andCarrying out any other duties that may be assigned.
For appointment as a Senior Principal Research Scientist, one must:Have a PhD in a relevant field any of the following fields; Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Ceramics and Building Materials, ICT, Food Technology, Energy, Environment, Project Studies, Leather or Textiles from a recognized InstitutionHave proven experience of at least twelve (12) years of uninterrupted research in a similar research institution, which must include being an author of at least four (4) scientific publications in refereed journals or relevant books (chapters) and one (1) verifiable technology/innovation which must have been packaged and disseminatedHave been the first (principal) author of one (1) grant-winning proposal in addition to at least one of the following achievements:Be an author of a published book in a relevant field;Be an editor of a published book in a relevant field;Have attended a strategic management course lasting not less than six (6) weeks from a recognized InstitutionHave a certificate in Project ManagementHave Computer Application skillsHave demonstrated a high degree of managerial and profession competencies as reflected in work performance and results; andHave demonstrated ability to translate National goals, policies and strategies to research programmes and projects.Have served as a Principal Research Officer for at least three (3) yearsHave a PhD in a relevant field from a recognized InstitutionHave authored at least six (6) scientific publications in refereed journals OR two (2) relevant book (chapters) and one (1) verifiable technology/innovation which must have been packaged and disseminatedHave been the first (principal) author of one (1) grant-winning proposal in addition to at least one of the following achievements:-Be an author of a chapter in a published book in a relevant field.Be an editor of a chapter in a published book in a relevant fieldHave a certificate in Project Management from a recognized Institution;Have attended a strategic management course lasting not less than six (6) weeks from a recognized InstitutionHave Computer application skillsHave demonstrated a high degree of managerial and professional competencies as reflected in work performance and results.3.3 Principal Research Scientist (PRS)

Duties and responsibilities as a Principal Research Scientist will include:Formulating, planning and implementing research projects of multidisciplinary natureCo-ordination of multi-disciplinary research projects and consultancy servicesCarrying out and review resource budgeting, utilization and management.Conducting identification surveys & analysisCarrying out collaborative research with industry and other relevant InstitutionsPreparing reports and technical/scientific publicationsIdentifying research innovations that have practical significance and devise strategies for their  implementationAdopting, adapting and transfering technologiesEnforcing safe and healthy working procedures to ensure safety at workplaceEnforcing control measures and ethical practices to comply with the Anti-Corruption Act and other statutory requirementsCarrying out training, nurturing, and mentoring, supervising and evaluating performance of officers working under him/her; andAny other duties that may be assigned.
For appointment as a Principal Research Scientist, one must:-Have a PhD in any of the following fields; Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Ceramics and Building Materials, ICT, Food Technology, Energy, Environment, Project Studies, Leather or Textiles from a recognized InstitutionHave proven evidence of two (2) technologies transferred/policy developmentHave nine (9) years proven experience in a research Institution, which must include being the first author of at least five (5) refereed-journal papers or two (2) published book chapters in addition to at least one of the following achievements:Be at least the second author in a refereed journal paper.Be at least the third author of book in a relevant field.Be at least the second author of a relevant book chapter.Be at least the second author of a grant-winning proposal.Be the first author of at least two (2) verifiable papers in conferences/symposia with proceedings.Be the second author of at least four (4) verifiable papers in conferences/symposia with proceedings; andHave registered a patent/utility model of an invention or innovation.Have served as a Senior Research Scientist for at least three (3) years;Have Masters’ degree in a relevant field of research from a recognized InstitutionHave proven evidence of one (1) technology transferred/policy development an authored three(3) refereed-journal papers or published a book chapter since last promotion in addition to at least one of the following achievements:Be at least the second author in a refereed-journal paper.Be at least the third author of a book in a relevant field.Be at least the second author of a relevant book chapter.Be at least the second author of a grant-winning proposal.Be the first author of at least two (2) verifiable papers in conferences/symposia with proceedings;Be the second author of at least four (4) verifiable papers in conferences/symposia with proceedings;Have registered a patent of an invention or innovation/utility model;Have Computer Application Skills.Have shown merit and ability as reflected in work performance and resultsHave attended a strategic management course lasting not less than six (6) weeks from a recognized InstitutionA PhD in a relevant field of research from a recognized institution will be an added advantage.Grade IR 10:
