About Us

The International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) is an international development, research and training organization with over 90 years of grassroots experience working in people-centered, sustainable development in Africa and Asia. IIRR maintains a strong presence in Eastern Africa and Southeast Asia. IIRR’s Headquarters and Regional Centre for Asia are located in the Philippines, the Africa Regional Center is in Kenya, and we maintain a liaison office in New York, USA.

IIRR-Africa has operations in four countries, namely; Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan and Uganda. It also has a project office in Zimbabwe that is coordinating project partnerships in Mozambique and South Africa. In May, 2014, IIRR-Africa initiated partnership with in Rwanda with potentials to establish a further presence.IIRR is looking for a dynamic, skilled, motivated, and experienced person to fill the post of the Regional Director for Africa with the below qualifications.

Job Summary

The Africa Regional Director is responsible for providing strategic and innovative leadership and supervision for growing and dynamic teams and programs in Africa. The primary functions include, but are not limited to, resource mobilization, program and human resource development, ensure institutional and programmatic accountability and good governance. The Africa Director will manage a team of professionals based in Nairobi while providing leadership and oversight to the region’s Country Directors and lead the Regional Management team.

Key Responsibilities

Provide strategic management and innovative team-based leadership for the regional programs coupled with effective coaching to countries to ensure synergy and mutual learning across the region.Lead in the formulation of strategies, mid and short-term plans, budgets, and ensure their smooth implementation and timely reporting.Lead resources mobilization efforts including development of proposals/concepts as well as negotiation with donors in close coordination with Country Directors, program teams and the President, and ultimately ensure adequate funding for programs and general operations.Develop and maintain strong and strategic partnerships and representation with donors, government agencies, and partner organizations and other stakeholders.Grow IIRR’s global outreach and influence by developing and packaging lessons from the field and using these lessons to offer international and customized trainings, study programs, and publications (using our unique writeshop methodology) and use these activities to generate unrestricted/earned income revenues to sustain programs and general operations.Strengthen systems (Finance, Human Resources, Internal controls, Communication, Reporting, etc.) across the region that are functioning efficiently and effectively and ensure compliance and adherence of these systems to the overall global systems and statutory obligations.Strengthen new country offices and develop new ones in consultation with the regional management team and the President/CEOEffectively manage partnership with implementing agencies by ensuring clear procedures, accountability and compliance which embrace our values of mutual respect, mutual trust, mutual knowledge and mutual help.Put in place a result-based management and monitoring, evaluation, and learning system to track progress, outcome and the impact of our work and ensure systematic documentation, packaging and disseminating of evidence of our programs and organization.Play positive and proactive role in the global management team and contribute to the overall development of IIRR.

Key Qualifications and Skills

Masters Degree in development studies, management, economics, social sciences or relevant fields. PhD in relevant field or discipline will be an added advantage.At least ten (10) years of relevant experience in leading regional organizations or large national program with strong program development and management skills.A strong track record of fundraising and resources mobilization for organization that focuses in capacity development. Skills include writing proposals/concepts, negotiation, strong networking with donors and designing innovative programs.Evidence of excellent public relations, presentation, written and oral communication skills.Practical experience in facilitation, training, coaching of teams and capacity building at the institutional and community levels.Evidence of strong networking with donors, governments, and the wider development community.Clear evidence of visionary leadership with clear understanding of community and organizational development, capacity building and people skills.How to apply:
