Intern: Communications | ReliefWeb


Adam Smith International Africa is seeking an Intern in Communications to support the Senior Communications Manager in providing basic research, writing and event management for its regional operations and projects in Kenya. This is a short term position based in Nairobi due to commence in May/June 2015 with three months input expected throughout the internship period.


The Intern will report to the Senior Communications Manager on technical issues and the Internship Programme Manager on contractual and liaison issues.

Background of the Internship


Adam Smith International Africa intends to provide internship opportunities to young men and women in its Nairobi head office and regional project offices. Internships will run for three to six months under close supervision from senior members of the team.


The purpose of the internship it to give Interns exposure to issues of economic development, skills development and employment; and developing skills such as public and private partner engagement, data analysis and management, report writing, and monitoring and evaluation.


Responsibilities


The Communications Intern will provide a set of support functions as set by the Senior Communications Manager as follows:


  • Undertake research and present the results in a comprehensible format

  • Compile and maintain a database of media contacts

  • Draft basic reports, releases and social media posts in English and Swahili

  • Take photographs and gather audio-visual material (with technical guidance from the Senior Communications Manager)

  • Preserve and archive text, photos and video material

  • Monitor local media and maintain a record of relevant stories

  • Liaise with partners, colleagues and suppliers

  • Assist in event planning

  • Other duties as determined by the Senior Communications Manager.

Selection criteria


Adam Smith International Africa is looking for a dynamic and energetic team player with:


  • Excellent English language and Swahili language writing skills

  • Confidence and creativity

  • Commitment

  • Proven experience in writing / media (e.g. school or student newspaper, blog posts, creative writing, short films)

  • Knowledge of social media

  • Knowledge of basic office computer programmes (MS Word, Exel etc)
