Vacancy: Project Manager
Location: The position will initially be based in Nairobi and then will be expected to travel to the research countries (Benin, Senegal, and possibly Rwanda) for up to 3 months at a time. (Out posted to various Francophone and Anglophone countries in Africa).
Company Description: An international consulting firm specialising in financial inclusion with ten offices in eight countries around the world. Our clients include leading financial institutions, mobile money service providers and large international donors.
Job Description: The Project Manager will lead the research in Francophone countries. These will be the primary responsibilities of the position, however, if timing allows, they may also play a role in the research that will be conducted in East Africa and South Asia.
Specifically, they will oversee the design and implementation of qualitative and quantitative field research from tool design to the output of country and provider level reports. The assignment will take place from May 2015 for one year, and may extend beyond this period.
The position will be based in Nairobi. The Manager will be expected to travel to the research countries (Benin and Senegal) for up to 3 months at a time. If the candidate is based in West Africa, the position may also be based there.
Research Design & Implementation
Agent Network Accelerator (ANA) Project
- Serve as country lead on the augmentation of research tools, such as questionnaires and key informant interviews, as the project moves between Benin and Senegal.
- Serve as country lead on overseeing the various components of field research such as qualitative and quantitative research including ensuring data collection is meeting its targets and deadlines in Benin and Senegal.
- Serve as country lead on the development of sampling strategies for individual countries, ensuring they stay in-line with project guidelines, yet are also suitable for specific countries (note a quantitative expert will assist with the actual calculations).
- Be responsible for enumerator training and data collection on the ground, including quality control measures for data capture.
- Be responsible for developing a field plan and overseeing the logistics of the various components of the project
- Manage a consultant for Francophone countries.
- Participate in scoping exercises to research countries, and potentially also support the presentation of results on provider and country-levels.
- Oversee the secondary research to create country profiles.
- Support on key publications including the country and provider reports that result from the research.
- Prepare jointly with Senior Manager RFPs for enumeration firms, advertise them, and shortlist candidates.
- Negotiate contracts with them under the supervision of the project manager, and serve as contact point for the firms, managing the execution of the contract in-line with project goals.
- Identify, recruit, contract and manage firms or consultants brought in for specialized tasks like secondary research, enumeration, data cleaning, and external quality control and other related tasks.
- Support project manager to report any irregularities from planned activities, and provide sophisticated advice on any augmentations that may be needed to existing plans.
Associated Activities
- Read and post relevant articles about the company on LinkedIn groups
- Represent the company at conferences, workshops, seminars etc if and when required
- Participate in Digital Media dialogues (blogs and discussions forums) linking the company work and Publications.
- Build relationships with potential clients

Experience
- Experience: Clearly show how you meet the experience required in your application letter.
- Interested persons should have four years of project management experience, preferably including supervising the implementation of both quantitative and qualitative research projects in the developing world.
- Experience with research design, tool creation, and managing data collection; preference will be given to those with experience in digital data collection methods and quality control.
- Fluent in French—speaking, reading and professional writing, as all outputs will be required in French.
Education / Training
- A minimum of a master’s degree (or equivalent) in Research, Economics, Management, Social Science, Policy or a related field.
Knowledge / Technical Skills
- Excellent French and English speaking and professional writing skills.
- Sophisticated planning, organisational and time management skills, including flexibility, attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure to meet changing deadlines
- Analytical and problem solving skills of a high order, including the ability to formulate recommendations and advice.
- Demonstrated ability to manage teams, ideally multiple teams in developing world environments conducting research.
- Proficient in computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

- Proven ability to work effectively in other cultures, communities and project teams.
- A high degree of self-drive, enthusiasm, flexibility and ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Strong communications skills, specifically presentation skills, training skills, and the ability to facilitate groups.

- Ability to work under pressure yet delivers on time with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Flexibility and willingness/ability to travel.
