NGO Innovation Officer Position Description
As the Chief Innovation Officer you will manage the innovative process of the organization with the responsibilities of identifying innovative ideas and bringing them to fruition in order to best benefit the overall goals of the organization.
The Chief Innovation Officer will work with other managers in the organization to develop and manage new ideas and innovation and their implementation throughout the organization.
Responsibilities and Duties
Supporting best practices: This will involve scouting and standardizing market research methods for novel ideas and insights; strategic innovation; promoting open innovation; and introducing group tools and processes that encourage creative thinking.
Developing skills: This is about training organization’s personnel on the skills they need, and developing and applying measures to track improvements in innovation and the skills underpinning them.
Supporting business units and incubator client businesses in new product and service initiatives. You will be acting as methodology expert and facilitator for the most critical innovation teams across the organization, supporting them in ‘raising the bar’ of their aspirations.
Training other managers to perform these roles also allows them to support innovation in their responsibilities.
Identifying new market spaces: This will include analyzing trends and market disruptions and searching for emerging new market opportunities. In some cases, you’ll need to develop them when they do not fit into the current business units/incubation clients boundaries.
Follows customer responses to new ideas, tracks and analyzes the success of new products or services, and responds to client/investor/partner (and sometimes the wider public’s) questions or concerns.
Helping people generate ideas: Setting up and running ideas generation platforms and formats like ‘Shark tank-like-pitching’, hackathons, and internal or external crowdsourcing for the benefit of the organization.
Directing seed funding/capital: Owning and allocating a yearly budget to fund “homeless ideas” that are deemed either too risky for the in conventional circles, or are outside their existing business boundaries, which might not otherwise get funded. You will provide an organizational home to nourish and protect new ideas.
Accommodating promising projects by designing resource allocation processes (portfolio, capital expenditure, budgeting) to take potentially disruptive innovations forward from the seed stage to the market without getting killed on the way by managers or others who are invested in the status quo.
Monitor research and development of other organizations to spot trends in innovation and supplement research findings in the organization’s industry.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must possess an inquisitive and creative mind.
Business acumen is critical requirement.
Must be independent and self-directed but able to work and lead a team of creative individuals.
Superior research and analytical skills to track and predict trends.
Must be able to work creatively within a budget and use innovation to find ways of more effectively managing resources.
Strong business knowledge, understanding of a variety of business practices, and familiarity with the company’s industry.
Must be able to collaborate with executives, creative teams and research and development.
Must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to persuasively sell ideas.
Must be willing to take calculated risks and manage expectations of both internal incubation client teams/Nailab internal projects/Nailab businesses and potential and existing partners/donors/investors/.
Education for Innovation Officer Jobs in Kenya
Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
Experience
A background in marketing, research and development, product development, or strategy is recommended (3-5 years).
At least 3 years’ experience in the industry or working in a leadership role in a similar industry.
Must be well-versed in human resources and personnel management.
