How to address a salary delay
By Jane Okoth,
“I have been working in a medium sized IT company for the last 3 years. Everything has been going on well until 4 months ago when me and my colleagues noticed our salary was being delayed.
We used to receive our salary from the 27th of every month, but now things have changed for the worst. Our salary is delayed for even up to 10th of the month and the boss or the people concerned have not come out to explain the reason why.
I feel like i want to have a talk with my boss, but I am not sure whether he is the right person to address me on the matter. How should go about it so as not to sound rude?” asks Mary Mutua in an email.
The Best Person To Approach in a Salary Delay Issue
Speaking to Justus Ngetich, a Recruitment Account Manager at Corporate Staffing Services says that the best thing to do is to follow protocol.
“Talk to your supervisor and get clear directions concerning the matter. Find out whether it is something that will be recurring and you need to be worried about or it is just a simple misunderstanding” he says.
If you are not successful, i suggest that you approach the Human Resource Professional and get further clarifications from him or her. This is because he or she is the best person to handle such a situation.
Explain to him or her why you are concerned about the salary delay and how your landlord or your bills would hear none of it.
Approaching Your Boss About Salary Delay Should Be The Last Resort
If you need to approach your boss, this should be the last resort. Again, it depends with the size of the company you are working for.
If you work in a company where you interact with your boss often, approach him but in a very cautious manner.
Any situation that involves money is always uncomfortable, so consider seeking clarification from the right people.
