One Acre Fund is a start-up initiative in Kenya, Rwanda and Burundi which serves some of the hardest-working farm families in the world. Instead of giving handouts to families, One Acre invests in farmers to generate a permanent gain in farm income. Our "investment bundle" includes education, finance, farm inputs, and export market access. We target subsistence farmers, and help them to generate a lasting, 100%+ gain in farm income per acre.
We have been operating since January 2006, and we currently serve 30,000 farm families (120,000 children). Our target is to serve 55,000 families (200,000 children) within 12 more months, scaling at a 50-100% annual growth rate thereafter. One Acre Fund has achieved high validation as an innovative social start-up, winning grants from the highly competitive Echoing Green, Draper Richards and Skoll Foundations, and first place wins at the Stanford and Yale social venture competitions. Job Description
As One Acre Fund expands, we are looking to hire the best development professionals in the world who have a desire to live in-field, in rural parts of Africa. We believe that the strongest current and former Peace Corps volunteers are a good talent pool to recruit from. So, we are looking for someone to travel to various African and Southeast Asian nations, to make contact with the Peace Corps administrators there (as well as with other NGO’s), and selectively recruit new talent in those countries. We would then hire them for Kenya, Rwanda, or Burundi, our current countries of operation, when they become available.
At the same time, we are also looking to learn more about various countries around Africa. Having a staff person collect basic data from government offices would be useful.
We are seeking an exceptionally talented professional with very strong independent problem-solving skills, an ability to self-manage, and strong overall judgment. This person should also have strong networking ability, and the general stability/ability to deal with traveling alone for long stretches of time. The minimum commitment to this job is 2 years.
The recruiter/ scout will:
- Travel to various African and Southeast Asian countries approximately 300 days per year (with 60 days of leave):
o There are approximately 26 African countries with an active Peace Corps office and/or relevant NGO offices.
o The recruiter/ scout would spend roughly 6 weeks covering a pair of countries at one time and likely alternate between Africa and Asia.
- Network with Multiple Peace Corps and NGO offices:
o Make contact with Peace Corps offices, and other potential talent sources.
o Get recommendations from country directors and other managers on the best current and former volunteers.
o Proactively meet the current volunteers in-field, screen, and share information about One Acre Fund. Reach out to recommended former volunteers as needed.
- Gather basic data:
o Go to various government offices and collect basic data on various districts in the country.
This is a serious, full-time job – PLEASE DO NOT APPLY if you are having a mid-life crisis and just want to travel the world. You will have zero flexibility in choosing countries. This is a full-time job with defined deliverables, and you will travel to rural areas with very few exciting things to see. PLEASE ALSO CONSIDER the potential personal difficulty of traveling to 20+ countries in a single year, for a minimum of two years.
A successful candidate will have these traits:
- *Ability to commit to this position for a minimum of 2 years.
- *Must speak English with complete fluency. French is a big plus.
- *Serious, legitimate, and demonstrable long-term interest in international development work.
- At least one year of experience living in a developing nation. Former PCV is ideal.
- Very strong self-manager. As this position has no fixed work hours or in-person supervision, you must be able to reliably manage projects and deadlines with high independence on a day-to-day basis. We are looking for someone with a demonstrated ability to work independently. This is a professional role, and we are looking for a professional-caliber person.
- Demonstrated experience traveling in developing countries for extended periods of time. The person holding this position must be stable, resourceful and able to navigate through difficult situations by themselves.
- Top-performing undergraduate background (please include GPA and test scores on your resume).
- 2-4 years work experience in a professional environment.
- Flexible and adaptable. We are looking for team members that combine strong leadership skills with a humble approach to service.
