Vacancy Notice: Adeso Consultants’ Register Background

Adeso is a humanitarian and development organization that is changing the way people think about and deliver aid in Africa. Working in a different way than most, Adeso believes that development must come from within, not outside African communities. Formerly known as Horn Relief, Adeso was established in 1991 in response to Somalia’s devastating humanitarian crisis and civil war and started as a small grassroots organization dedicated to helping Somalia’s pastoralist groups, particularly women and youth. Adeso has since grown into an African-based organization and is currently working in three countries – Kenya, Somalia and South Sudan. In these places, Adeso advocates for much-needed resources for our partner communities, and works hard to co-create innovative long-lasting solutions.

Adeso works in the following 4 areas, while the founding belief that protection of the natural environment is key to a thriving community cuts across everything the organization does: • Developing skills for life and work – Through formal and informal education and skills training, Adeso gives young people and adults the skills and knowledge they need to lead more productive and self-sufficient lives. • Providing humanitarian aid – When people’s needs are urgent, Adeso responds promptly and efficiently, very often using a form of aid the organization pioneered in East Africa – cash transfers. Adeso also helps people meet their food security and water needs, and support communities’ safe sanitation and hygiene practices. • Reinvigorating the economy – A strong community needs a strong local economy. Adeso works to strengthen local economies and protect communities from future shocks. • Influencing policy – Adeso advocates on behalf of the communities it works with, giving them a voice on a local and international stage, and ensuring their interests and concerns are considered at the highest level.

Consultancy Requirements
