Description2012/32 Maize Doubled Haploid (DH) Operations ManagerThe International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) seeks a results-oriented and highly motivated Operations Manager for establishing and successfully operating the Maize Doubled Haploid (DH) Facility in Africa. As a Nairobi-based member of the CIMMYT-Global Maize Program (GMP), the selected candidate will work under the direct supervision of the Global Maize Program Director, and will work in close interface with CIMMYT-GMP scientists, as well as with scientists/clients from the international and national institutions (including not-for-profit, public as well as private) in Africa.
Specific responsibilities of the position will include:
Support the design and establishment of a maize DH facility in Kenya, based on an in vivo haploid induction and DH production protocol.Plan, coordinate and implement an efficient maize DH production pipeline, including schedules to meet the internal and external demands.Coordinate the delivery (in a cost- and time-effective manner) of seed of the DH lines, following appropriate stewardship and quality management standards.Efficiently manage all activities in the maize DH production pipeline, including maintenance of the laboratory/greenhouse/field equipment/facilities.Create a safe working environment for maize DH facility, including general safety and health of the DH operations staff.Optimize the DH production protocol to improve production efficiency.Manage an operational budget at or below budgeted amount.Train and supervise lab and field personnel in all phases of DH production.Contribute to the visibility of CIMMYT’s research, partnerships and impacts.Undertake any other task, as assigned by the Program Director.We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications:
At least a Master’s degree in Agriculture or Horticulture or a science-related field. Advanced degree is a plus.At least 3-5 years of work experience in successfully managing a DH facility or a major laboratory / Greenhouse / Biosafety facility or seed production of environmentally-sensitive crop(s).Demonstrated ability to manage large production schedules in agricultural crops.Demonstrated competence in the use of computer software for data management and analysis.Fluency in spoken and written English; other foreign languages (French/Portuguese) is a plus.An effective and energetic team player, with the ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multi-cultural environment.Strong self-motivation and innovative skills, with capacity to work independently and meeting deadlines.The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, known by its Spanish acronym, CIMMYT® (www.cimmyt.org), is a not-for-profit research and training organization with partners in over 100 countries. The center works to sustainably increase the productivity of maize and wheat systems and thus ensure global food security and reduce poverty. The center's outputs and services include improved maize and wheat varieties and cropping systems, the conservation of maize and wheat genetic resources, and capacity building. CIMMYT belongs to and is funded by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) (www.cgiar.org) and also receives support from national governments, foundations, development banks, and other public and private agencies.
CIMMYT has had enormous impact in the developing world. It is the center of excellence for work on two of the three most important food crops in the developing world. Its most famous employee, Dr. Norman Borlaug, is credited by many with saving more lives than any other individual in the history of the world. Borlaug’s work dramatically increased yields of wheat in the Indo-Gangetic plains in the 1960s and 1970s, staving off starvation for hundreds of millions. For this work, Borlaug received the Nobel Prize in 1970. Scores of other CIMMYT efforts have saved or enriched millions of lives, from releasing disease-resistant varieties and varieties resistant to drought and heat and soil deficiencies, to dispersing techniques to reduce farmer costs and post-harvest losses. In developing countries, wheat varieties developed by CIMMYT and its partners cover 75% of the area planted to modern wheat varieties.
This is an internationally recruited position based in Nairobi, but will involve frequent travel to Kiboko, where the DH facility will be located and to other locations in Africa, as needed. The initial appointment is for three years, with possible renewals based on performance.
