Walter Reed Project Pediatrician and Principal Laboratory Technologist (Microbiology) Jobs in Kenya

The Walter Reed Project, HIV Program-Kericho in collaboration with Henry Jackson Foundation for Medical Research International (HJF MRI) is seeking to fill the following positions. The Program carries out HIV AIDS vaccine and therapeutic research, and supports HIV prevention, care and treatment programs in South Rift Valley (SRV).
 Key Duties and Responsibilities:Provide technical assistance in implementation of PEPFAR programs targeting Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health (MNCH) including Elimination of Mother To Child Transmission of HIV (EMTCT), Early Infant Diagnosis (EID), linkage, and retention in care/treatment.Facilitate training and mentorship for health care workers offering MNCH HIV services at partner hospitals.Provide consultation support in management of patients in need of advanced care / treatment, including interpretation and use of advanced HIV and OI tests.Provide direct medical care to both children and adults with HIV and HIV related ailments.Refer patients requiring special care, investigations and treatment.Maintain a safe working environment with appropriate training of other personnel.Submit reports as may be required.Represent KEMRI/WRP Kericho in stakeholders meetings.Carry out educational programs on HIV/AIDS within the community.May be called upon to act as a principal investigator or coinvestigator for KEMRI / USAMRU-K research protocols.Assist in carrying out various protocol training activities.Ensure compliance with GCP and all applicable regulatory requirements.Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B; CH.B).Masters degree in Pediatrics (MMED).Must be registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board.At least five years working experience.Previous experience in medical/clinical research and good knowledge of HIV / AIDS are added advantages.Working knowledge of current MoH Guidelines in PMTCT and HIV Care and Treatment.2. Principal Laboratory Technologist (Microbiology) 
Key Duties and Responsibilities:Perform tests and sample analysis in Microbiology, Mycobacteriology and Serology.Coordinate and participate in a variety of complex technical tasks in the performance of laboratory tests to obtain data for use in clinical and research activities.Manipulate molecular assays related to microbes (especially TB) using available techniques.Perform Quality Control and Quality Assurance activities.Perform calibration, standardization and routine preventive maintenance on various laboratory instruments in accordance with the established procedures, protocols and schedules as applicable.Troubleshoot equipment and any system failures.Operate automated/semi automated analyzers and manual equipment as applicable.Review test results for accuracy and consistency, correlating results with patients’ conditions and notify appropriate health professional in the event of Critical/Panic Values.Prepare samples for storage and maintain specimen inventory.Comply with all relevant safety and infection control policies and procedures.Assist in writing and revising of the technical procedures and manuals.Maintain electronic and hard copies of all laboratory records.Calibrate, operate and maintain all laboratory instruments and perform any other duty assigned.Master of Science degree in a biological science discipline with a bias in Mycobacteriology.Must have done a Bachelors Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or equivalent.At least three years’ experience working in a biological laboratory. Candidates with experience in medical laboratory will be given preference.Good knowledge of principles and laboratory application of microbiology, microscopy, and serology.Current knowledge of laboratory facilities, methods and equipmentsAbility to determine correct procedures and perform a variety of clinical laboratory examinations, as well as preparation of reagents, stains and media.Strong interpersonal skills and good verbal and written communication skills.Terms: 1 year contract, renewable as per KEMRI Scheme of Service. Probation period for the first 3 months.
 Remuneration: Compensation is negotiable within a relevant grade, based on educational level, relevant experience and demonstrated competency. The salary scheme is based on KEMRI scale.
