When going for an interview, you have to be well prepared in a number of areas and carrying out well organized research is what will determine how the interview goes.
You will need to go through a series of expected interview questions if you are to ace it and get the job.
Among the questions you are likely to come across is “What do you know about our company?”. It might not be framed in these exact words, but will mean to seek your knowledge of the company you are interviewing at. How much do you know? Or what important information did you come across?
How to answer; What do you know about our company?
If you are thinking this question is an easy one, you are right, but you also know that the easy questions are the hardest to answer. Why? You never really know what angle the interviewer is looking to find or what answer he/she is looking for.
To provide a clear answer, you must do the following;
1. Research extensively and create a list of achievements & Failures
This question demands to know how familiar you are with the company and what important milestone or failure the company has been part of that you can find out in only your research.
To get this information, visit the company’s website, their social media pages, search the company on Google and every publication you can find. After the search, prepare a list of the information you come across and list down the achievements & failures the company has experienced. This will help you determine what to say and what not to. Remember to verify the sources.
2. Focus on the good things, leave out the bad
While it may be big news that a company has experienced losses, no employer is looking to hear negative things about them directly. Instead of picking out on the obvious and clear loss, pick out other areas that the company is involved in.
You can decide to talk about the company’s products or services, revenues, founder history or product expansion, the growth of the company, their area of operation, number of staff, their business partners and even their biggest moments. Pick out a special thing about them as compared to other players and remember to mention something about the department you are applying to.
3. When mentioning an achievement, be careful not to overpraise
You may come across information that occured to you and the publication as a great achievement but according to the company, that information is not close to great and this may impact their conclusions about you.
To avoid misleading the interviewer, stay away from giving your opinion about the achievement, just mention it. For example, “This company was presented with company of the year award at XYZ awards for their work in …”
The secret to this question is to focus on something special or unique that not everyone could come across in their research. Your answer will demonstrate your expertise and value to the company, so be careful what you say.
