Deliver Training to Farmer Groups

1.0 Background

1.1 About Farm Africa: Farm Africa’s goal is to reduce poverty and food insecurity. We work with African smallholder farmers, pastoralists and forest-based communities to develop innovative approaches and use proven new technologies to make sustainable improvements to their livelihood activities through more effective management of their natural resources.

In addition, we support our beneficiaries in adding value to their activities and linking them to markets in order to establish viable income-generating enterprises.

Founded in 1985, we have a track record of implementing successful grassroots development projects and improving relevant policies on agricultural development.

We currently work in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, and South Sudan. Farm Africa’s strategy is to use the experience and knowledge gained from projects to document good practices that we share with other organisations (both governmental and non-governmental) working in rural and urban development.

1.2 About the project: The Urban Agriculture (Urban Gardening) is an integrated and multi-sector project in Dagoretti district of Nairobi, Kenya.

The project interventions aim at contributing to sustainable access to food, addressing food insecurity and the integrated management of illnesses and malnutrition; promoting behavioural changes and strengthening of those policies which guarantee the ‘right to food’ as a fundamental human right.

Dagoretti District has 3 Divisions; Kawangware, Waithaka, Golf Kenyatta, and 18 informal settlements that emerged in the 1960s. The inhabitants have been increasing from 14,000 in 1969 to 330,000 in 2009.

Absolute poverty rate in the district is at 46%; 37% of the population is aged below 17 years, and over 30% of them live in the streets.

The high degree of vulnerability and risk for children and youths below 17 years is related to the high level of malnutrition, food insecurity, lack of access to health facilities and limited work opportunities.

The Project aims at reducing poverty and vulnerability of the local people by means of an intervention model which integrates the agricultural sector with healthcare, access to clean water, protection and social education and creation of income generating activities; aims that are in line with the Kenya Vision 2030.
