Who We Are
Girl Effect is an international non-profit that builds media that girls want, trust and need. From chatbots to chat shows, and TV dramas to tech, our content helps adolescent girls in Africa and Asia make choices and changes in their lives.
We create safe spaces for girls, sharing facts and answering questions about health, nutrition, education, and relationships, empowering girls with the skills to negotiate and redefine what they are told is possible “for a girl”.
Our reach is 50 million and counting. And we’re using technology to reach girls at scale so every girl can choose to be in control of her body, her health, her learning and her livelihood.
Because when a girl unlocks her power to make different choices that change her life, it inspires others to do so too. She starts a ripple effect that impacts her family, community, and country.
That’s the Girl Effect.
Background
With the support of MSD for Mothers, Girl Effect is designing, launching, and implementing an 18-month project to develop a new digital product or products that will help connect young women in Kenya to sexual and reproductive health services and products (oral contraception, IUDs, implants, consultations with gynecologist and more. Digital technologies have opened up new ways for women to access these products and services online. However, there are still too many barriers that prevent young women from taking advantage of these options.
Girl Effect is bringing together young women, service providers and other key stakeholders to co-create and test prototypes and products for a new digital product or products that will work with existing platforms to expand access to healthcare across Kenya.
Girl Effect has embarked on an 18-month co-creation project with the ultimate goal of creating a minimum viable product (MVP) that is truly responsive to adolescent girls’ SRH needs. This co-design process will draw on girls’ lived experience, particularly that of accessing SRH services and products, and their own creativity and determination. The process will also equip the girls with the skills and tools needed to take a seat at the table with donors, providers, and tech experts to build the tools and services they want.
Context
Girl Effect has begun a co-design process that draws on girls’ lived experiences, particularly their journeys to access SRH services and products, and harnesses their creativity and determination. The process is also designed to equip girls with the skills and tools needed to take a seat at the table with donors, providers, and tech experts to build the tools and services they want. The purpose of this product ecosystem will be to
Reach the highest # of young people that we can in both locations, Migori and Nairobi
Spark and ignite conversation! Ideally, we are seeing high volumes of questions, at which point we will push people to the chatbot and the service linkage concierge
Inspire young people to take charge of their health and bodies and engage in discussion
Drive girls towards service uptake wherever relevant
Big Idea:
Ignite Curiosity and Generate Conversation about Sexual Health for Urban and Rural Audiences in Kenya.
The Audience
Overall: Young people between the ages of 18-24 years old
Primary audience
- Girls aged 15 - 19 yrs in both Nairobi (Urban) and Migori (Rural parts of Kenya)
Secondary Audience
- Girls aged 10-14 years
- Male sexual partners (Boyfriend and other sexual partners)
- Enabling audience (Parents, friends)
Our immediate target audience during this phase of the MVP is adolescent girl aged 15-19 years who needs to access contraceptives and other reproductive health services.
We anticipate the service could potentially reach girls of younger ages, between 10-14 years, especially in Migori county, where the sexual debut age is lower due to cultural practices.
During the later stages of the pilot, we will explore the possibility of widening our audience to include her male sexual partners, who have a considerable influence on her reproductive health choices. Design considerations should factor potential inclusion of male audiences in the future. This male audience could be her peers and older male sexual partners up to the age of 50 years who engage her sexually in exchange for financial benefits.
Within this context, we’re looking for a music production company to create an original music track, 6 radio spots, 6 podcasts and either radio show takeovers or 6-8 pre-recorded radio show segments.
The radio content is focused on the rural audience in Migori, and the objective is to reach young people in lo-fi or no-fi contexts, sparking conversations and questions and leading them to the USSD and/or helpline to up-take services if relevant.
