Purpose of the Role:
Brooke is looking to recruit Fundraising and Communications Officer who will play a vital role in generating funds for the organization through various fundraising activities and initiatives. This position requires a strong understanding of fundraising strategies, donor relationship management, and the ability to develop and implement effective fundraising campaigns. The Fundraising and Communications Officer will work closely with the fundraising team and other stakeholders to support the organization's financial goals and objectives. In addition, the role will be supporting both internal and external information and communication requirements in line with best practice so as to enable Brooke achieve high impact donkey welfare programs.
The role will be important in supporting the communication activities of BEA for increased Brooke’s visibility, and improved documentation and communication of programme results, experiences and success stories to different stakeholders (including donors), and for fund raising. The communication activities are also to facilitate and support BEA’s work on policy influencing, as well as education and awareness raising on equine welfare.
Main Tasks and Responsibilities
Fundraising Strategy and Planning:
- Collaborate with the fundraising team to develop/update and implement an overall fundraising strategy aligned with the organization's mission and goals.
- Conduct research and analysis to identify new fundraising opportunities and potential donor prospects.
- Provide input and recommendations for fundraising campaigns and initiatives.
- Support donor cultivation and relationship management activities.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with existing and prospective donors.
- Develop personalized cultivation plans for major donors and steward them through regular communications and engagement opportunities.
- Support the Fundraising and Communications Manager in responding to donor inquiries, acknowledge contributions, and ensure timely and accurate donor recognition.
Grant Writing and Proposal Development:
- Identify and research grant opportunities from foundations, corporations, and government agencies.
- Prepare and submit compelling grant proposals and applications to secure funding.
- Collaborate with program staff to gather relevant information and data for grant proposals.
Fundraising Events and Campaigns:
- Support in planning, organizing, and execute fundraising events, including galas, charity auctions, and community outreach programs.
- Coordinate online fundraising campaigns, leveraging social media platforms and email marketing tools.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of fundraising events and campaigns and make recommendations for improvement.
Donor Database Management:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date donor records in the fundraising database.
- Track and analyse donor data to identify giving patterns, trends, and opportunities for donor engagement.
- Generate regular reports on fundraising activities, donor contributions, and campaign results.
Donor Stewardship and Reporting:
- Ensure timely and accurate reporting to donors, including progress updates, impact reports, and financial statements.
- Provide regular communication and stewardship to donors, keeping them informed about the organization's work and the impact of their contributions.
Collaboration and Teamwork:
- Collaborate with the fundraising team, program staff, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure fundraising efforts align with organizational objectives.
- Support and assist in cross-functional initiatives and projects as needed.
Coordinating BEA’s Communication and Public Relations Activities:
- Develop and implement BEA’s communication strategy in line with the international Brooke communication strategy.
- Be responsible for compliance with the Brooke’s brand guidelines to ensure standardized and consistent messaging to key stakeholders and the public.
- In consultation with the Regional Director and the FCM, be responsible for managing reputation, appropriate public relations and marketing to maintain and enhance the BEA’s image and visibility.
- Raise the visibility of BEA at local and national events in public outreach and awareness initiatives and through the media (newspapers, radio, TV, magazines, etc.)
- Ensure that the work of BEA retains a high visibility via the use of the media, contribution to in country publications.
- consultation with the Regional Director and FCM, be responsible for compliance with the Brooke brand guidelines.
- As directed by the Regional Director and or the FCM, organize for visits from the Brooke UK Fundcom team, trustees, donors, journalists and partner staff to BEA.
Documenting and Communicating BEA Experiences and Achievements:
- Solicit information on a regular basis (from BEA direct programmes and form partners) for update in the website, blogs and other channels to meet the organizational goals.
- Identify and collect case stories, images and video clips to provide up-to-date information for fundraising team, for public communication and for regular programme reports.
- Ensure a high level of information flow to the FCM, Regional Director and the UK.
- Prepare periodic reports (e. g. annual reports) for public use (not technical report).
- Organize information in the BEA shared folder or other such like platforms, including photos and video clips for preparing proposals, reports, and other communication materials to donors and supporters.
- Provide support, arrange and coordinate BEA meetings and events, as well as BEA’s participation in public forums.
- Proper archiving of photographs, footage, and case stories in an orderly manner.
Working with the Media
- Regular monitoring and analysis of the impact of media coverage, focusing on the civil society sector and equine welfare.
- Develop and maintain lists of (including mailing lists) of key media partners.
- Building and maintaining close working relationships with the media.
- Assist in the management of media communications, campaigns, and coverage.
- Prepare media briefings, press releases and images for the press.
- In consultation with FCM, Snr. Advocacy Officer and Regional Director, react speedily to media enquiries, organizing interviews and identifying spokespeople as appropriate.
- In consultation with FCM and Regional Director, network with relevant channels to build a reputation for the BEA that will resonate with key stakeholders including partners.
IEC Materials
- Work closely and provide technical support to the programme staff (BEA and partners’) on the development of appropriate IEC materials (posters, leaflets, brochures, billboards, etc.).
- Work closely and provide technical support to the Advocacy Advisor in relation to the production and use of communication materials in the policy influencing work.
- Coordinate the development of communication and promotion materials (video clips, posters, calendars, shirts, etc.) by the country office.
- Work with the prequalified service providers for photography, filming, design, printing, editing and related tasks that may be required by BEA.
- In consultation with the FCM, Finance and Operations Manager, Admin and Logistics personnel, and the Regional Director, coordinate work to produce quality IEC materials including (brochures, t-shirts, face mask, photographs, films, etc.).
Supporting and Facilitating Communication for Fund Raising Activities of both BEA and London Office
- Work closely with the Head Office and BEA Fundraising and communications Department in preparing and providing information and documents (e. g. case stories, pictures, video documentation, etc.).
- Provide information and actively participate in digital media of the Brooke (the website, social media channels etc.).
- Contribute stories and articles for publications of the Brooke, based on the programme and experiences of the country programme.
- Ensure that the work of BEA retains a high visibility worldwide, via submission of regular and high- quality information to the UK office in consultation with the FCM and the larger BEA team.
- Respond and update information, case stories, pictures and video footages and data requests from the UK Fundcom team and the BEA team as required.
BEA Staff and Partners’ Support and Capacity Development
- Handling and maintenance of BEA’s audio-visual equipment.
- Ensure that BEA staffs are kept up to date of web-based communication and information management system.
- Provide technical support to BEA staff and partners’ staff on communication.
- Provide/Facilitate training and capacity building of BEA and partners’ staff on communication related issues.
- Regularly update the FCM, RD, the BEA team and the Brooke UK relevant staff on issues from the media.
General
- Perform such additional tasks as may reasonably be required by the FCM and the Regional Director.
- Work with UK staff on the development and maintenance of a BEA website.
- In undertaking the role, comply with all Brooke global and country policies and procedures.
- Need to ensure that case studies for BEA work including Restricted Funding project reports are collected and submitted in time.
- This list of tasks may not be exhaustive and will be reviewed from time to time.

Key Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, Competencies and Experience

Knowledge and experience
1.At least a first degree (Bachelors) in a relevant communication – Communication Studies, Public Relations, Resource Mobilisation, Development Studies or related fields. journalism, international development, law or animal health/welfare discipline
2.Significant experience (over 5 years) working in a dedicated advocacy / journalism position on international development cooperation, experience in media, public relations, communications, fund Raising and related works.
3.Demonstrable experience of preparing reports and conference presentations to describe policy research activities
4.Knowledge of basic animal welfare concepts and an understanding of the importance of working equines to the economies of developing countries
5.Experience of developing institutional IEC materials
6.Good understanding of the media and communications environment in the East African region.
7.Good experience in documentation and communication with different kinds of supporters and donors.
8.Excellent communication skills (oral and written) in English and Kiswahili.
9.Good and creative ability and skills in the use of audio-visual equipment.
10.Good information management skills, including the ability to write clear and concise reports for variety of audiences.
11.Commitment and enthusiasm for the Brooke’s mission and values in promoting equine welfare.
12.Experience in working in the NGO Sector.
13.Knowledge of basic animal welfare concepts and the importance of working equines to households / the economy.
14.Strong IT skills
