Job Description
KANCO is a national membership network of organization with over 1000 Non-Governmental Organization (NGOs), Community Based Organization (CBOs), Faith Based Organization (FBOs), Private Sector, Research and Learning Institutions responding to HIV & AIDS, TB and other Public Health concerns in Kenya.
It is also accredited as a Linking Organization with the International HIV & AIDS Alliance.
Its mission is to provide leadership, promote collaboration and enhance capacity among Civil Society organizations (CSOs) and other stakeholders to respond to HIV & AIDS and TB at the community level.
KANCO is collaborating with AHF for a Grassroot project to be implemented in four counties in Kenya (Vihiga, Turkana, Siaya, Muranga).
KANCO is seeking to employ suitable persons for the following position:-
Job Title: County Grassroots Coordinator
Reports to: Projector Coordinator through campaigns Coordinator
Job Locations Vihiga, and Siaya,
Position Summary: Responsible for implementation of the project at County Level with a triple mission: – monitor the political and administrative situation at County level to identify potential allies, analyse health issues as they affect the very poor to determine campaign priorities that are impactful & bold, yet doable and develop & nurture active and healthy Citizen Advocacy groups.
Responsibilities
Campaigns identification, design and implementation at the county level, including setting and delivering on citizen advocacy.
Mapping potential local allies, as well as possible opponents, among elected officials at the County Executive branch, in civil society (including media) have access to them or influence them.
Implement KANCO’s citizen organizing model in the selected county
In collaboration with other staff, deliver on annual goals and strategy, metrics and activities to build the network of community citizen advocates and chapters.
Develop a plan of action to identify and cultivate a pipeline of potential advocacy leaders by networking with like-minded local organizations, community leaders, and other entities working on health.
Organizes invitations to advocacy groups, leads group advocacy meetings, and provide support to new advocates.
Support to Citizen Chapters by providing training to new grassroots groups and advocates in advocacy skills (working with government, media, and community), group dynamics, how government works, and planning.
Organize regular meetings and phone calls with group leaders and advocates for updates, training and support.
Support the grassroots groups and chapters to build leadership, take regular action toward campaign goals, and build their Chapters.
Create forums for Group Leaders to share and support each other; share innovations, stay abreast of campaign plans and grassroots interests as well as facilitate communications with advocates from other Countries.
Create emails, text messages, and other communications of encouragement to the citizen advocates
Adapt existing training and support tools for the local context where required, and deliver those trainings to the grassroots citizen advocates to build their confidence and success.
Track actions and successes of the Chapters.
External Communications by working with KANCO issue analysts to develop a media strategy that will advance the campaign objectives and inform about expansion efforts.
Identify media targets, key messages and key media products.
Conducting outreach to NGOs, Unions and other organizations to encourage more citizen action and to gather intelligence as to priority health issues for the poor of the County.
Work with the Communication team to create content for social media, traditional media, websites, and where appropriate, e-actions.
Create a bank of useful campaign-related stories and volunteer testimonials for use in media outlets.
Develop best practice for Grass roots advocacy
Report regularly metrics on work undertaken
Evaluate progress against initial objectives and against the budget and make corrections where required.
Support in all other KANO programs
Person Specification
Bachelor’s Degree in a social science or Public Health
5 years working experience working with at least 2 years in grassroots volunteers and/or community organizing.
Proven capacity to create and deliver on effective and successful advocacy projects.
Strong verbal and writing skills
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, and capacity to work effectively with a variety of stakeholders, including decision makers, volunteers, media and NGO partners
Proficiency in English and local Specific County language is a must
Knowledge of health programs.
A self-starter and works independently with minimal guidance and supervision.
Experience in the political, citizen engagement, and legislative processes in the counties.
Passion for taking action that will make a difference.
Gregarious and enjoys working with, mentoring, and motivating others.
Experience implementing multi-faceted projects involving media generation, public policy, and/or interactions with politicians.
Experience in community, union, religious, and/or student grassroots organization is preferable.
Willingness to travel within (select county)
Superior written and oral communication capabilities
Good organizational skills.
