Rainforest Alliance Consultancy Opportunity
Senior Consultant, Programme Development (East & Southern Africa)
The Rainforest Alliance, an international non-profit organization that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behaviour, are seeking a senior consultant to guide and support the Rainforest Alliance’s fundraising and programme activities in East and Southern Africa.
The Consultant will develop and maintain relationships with important stakeholders and donors, coordinate program management with other Rainforest Alliance divisions, and lead in the design of project proposals for the Rainforest Alliance to fulfil its strategic priorities in the region, with a particular focus on Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Malawi.
Deliverables and Level of Effort:
- Cultivates partnerships with priority donors and contacts, including governments, corporations and foundations;
- Assists in development of a pipeline of specific upcoming funding opportunities for East and Southern Africa, with a specific focus on Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda;
- Identifies and facilitates communication with potential project partners, including both local and international NGOs;
- Assists in scheduling and preparing for meetings with donors and other stakeholders, including review of meeting profiles;
- Reports on donor and stakeholder meetings and follow-up communications regarding program and project development opportunities;
- Reviews solicitations for technical content as part of the proposal process and provides recommendations on which opportunities to pursue;
- Provides input into technical fundraising proposals and budgets, from initial concepts to advanced proposals, including participating in project design; and
- Input into proposal budgets.
Anticipated level of effort: up to 80 days between April and July
Qualifications:
- 12-15 years of development sector experience in East & Southern Africa, especially in Kenya, of which at least 5 years in a senior leadership (e.g. Chief of Party or Programn Director) role; must be familiar with tea & coffee supply chains and production and processing activities;
- Extensive knowledge and network of contacts across the development sector, including with major multilateral donors such as USAID, NORAD and UK-DFID;
- Demonstrated experience developing and winning proposals;
- Farmer training and/or extension experience, especially in the design, organization and delivery of training events;
- Experience with forestry, food security and climate-smart agriculture project management is preferred, ideally involving small-scale producers;
- Familiarity with certification/verification issues and systems is preferred;
- Experience in the development of work plans and budgets; ability to work independently and in a team towards defined objectives and goals; and
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively in Kenya and other countries in Eastern and Southern Africa, and to spend significant periods in rural areas.

Compensation: The successful applicant will be offered a fixed term consultancy agreement for four months at a competitive remuneration, with possibility of extension. No benefits will be paid.
