Temporary Post: Library Assistant

The African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) is a not-for-profit Pan-African institution, dedicated for over 25 years to enabling the advancement of economic policy research and training in Africa. 





The Consortium’s mandate and strategic intent is built on the basis that sustained develop-ment in sub-Saharan Africa requires well-trained, locally based professional economists. 






 

AERC agitates the provision of capacity building in economic policy in Francophone and Anglophone African countries through provision of support in the areas of policy research and training.

AERC is seeking to recruit a suitable individual to fill the following temporary position.  





The position will assist the Training Department in the Joint Facility of Electives (JFE), a facility that runs for 4 months from June to October 2016.  





The JFE caters for the electives component of graduate training at Masters and PhD level for about 110 students from various participating universities in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).


Library Assistant – Temporary Position

The Library Assistant assists with the day-to-day operation of the JFE library in a manner that is responsive to the information needs of the various JFE participants including Visiting Lecturers / Professors, students, AERC staff and other authorized library users. 





The Library Assistant ensures that the JFE library circulation, inquiry and stock management functions run effectively and efficiently in meeting the targeted user needs.





The holder of the position also assists in the setting up and closure of the JFE, and provides administrative support to the JFE.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Assists in setting up and closure of the JFE.

  • Processing of library books (ordering, classifying, bar-coding, cataloguing, indexing and input to electronic library system) for access by JFE participants and in updating of JFE Library database.

  • Ordering, cataloguing, storing and retrieval of research, reference and training materials needed for the JFE.

  • Updating of signage and book labels, and compilation of reading materials both electronically and in print/hard copy and photocopying of course materials for JFE participants and the JFE Secretariat.

  • Takes stock and maintains proper records or data about the individual readers, library units, organizations, etc, that participate in the use of library materials.

  • Provides reference service and internet-based research assistance for visiting lecturers, students and other authorized library users. This includes retrieval of information from internal databases (library software system) and conducting literature search.

  • Assists with access to journal subscriptions, both print and electronically based and from library CD-ROMs

  • Assists with invigilation of JFE examinations.


Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Library or Information Sciences;

  • At least 3 years’ experience as a Library Assistant

  • Highly skilled in use of databases;

  • Good computer skills – MS Office

  • Knowledge of library Software systems or other comparable library software systems

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

  • Flexibility and willingness to work for long hours

  • Willingness to reside at the facility for the duration of 5 months
