Overview
WUSC– World University Service of Canada – is a leading Canadian non-profit organization in international development, committed to providing education, employment and empowerment opportunities that improve the lives of millions of disadvantaged youth around the world. WUSC is working in partnership with Windle International Kenya (WIK) to implement Kenya Education Equity Project (KEEP) to support girls in Kakuma and Dadaab refugee camps. The KEEP aims to support girls in northern Kenya, both in and around the Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps. Girls in these areas are considered to be particularly vulnerable and in need of support. Opportunities to access quality education in schools are very limited in these areas and support for girls’ education is very low in the communities relative to that for boys. KEEP works towards the creation of girl-friendly school environments and fostering parental and community support for girls' education.
Background and Rationale
KEEP II is a five-year project which began in April 2017 and will end in March 2022. The vision of KEEP II is to create conditions for learning that will allow approximately 20,673 marginalized girls from Kakuma and Dadaab refugee camps and the surrounding host communities in the counties of Garissa, Wajir, Fafi and Turkana. All of the targeted beneficiaries of KEEP II meet GEC’s definition of highly marginalised, Level 3 beneficiaries, facing significant barriers including transience, poverty, remoteness, negative socio-cultural attitudes, early marriage, forced marriage, and early pregnancy, a significant household chore burden, and low levels of parental and school support.[i]
With a theory of change centered on the premise that the ideal conditions for learning are created by mutually supportive relationships amongst and between the learner, the school, and the home, KEEP II has delivered targeted support to the learner, home, and school, and as well leveraged the power of community mobilizers to strengthen the collaboration between all three actors. The project continues to implement various interventions in order to attain its goal of retaining girls in school. These include teacher training – to enhance the teachers’ effectiveness in delivering the remedial classes and regular schools; infrastructure upgrading - to improve girl-friendliness and the capacity of schools to absorb more learners; provision of scholarships and cash transfers to girls – to promote attendance; life skills support – to equip girls with core skills to support them within and outside the learning environment; psycho-social support – to enable the learners build life skills necessary for transition; community engagement – to continually inform people of the work of the project and the importance of girls’ education; as well as capacity building of stakeholders to build their capacity in gender-responsive, child-safe, and inclusive school management.
KEEP has made significant strides over the past few years in achieving the project goals. As the project comes to a close in March 2022, there is a need to document the key project highlights through quality photos and videos that can be used in the future to communicate the project milestones in both Kakuma and Dadaab.
