Since establishing the Africa Program in 2007, TNC’s vision in Africa is to work towards fostering a sustainable future for people and nature, partnering with indigenous communities, governments, and the private sector across more than 22 million hectares on the continent. Our efforts are firmly rooted in people, leveraging scientific and technical expertise as we collaborate with key stakeholders to conserve and enhance Africa’s shared resources in the countries we operate. Marketing and Communications play a pivotal role in the Africa Program, developing compelling impact stories for conservation deliverables across diverse landscapes. Communications apply multifaceted approaches to raise the visibility of The Nature Conservancy in Africa as a thought leader and partner of choice toward achieving our 2030 goals, and the continent’s vision of a prosperous and wild Africa. Marketing and Communications, design strategies and campaigns to engage key target audiences who can positively influence conservation action, policy, and practices so that TNC can meet its positive future vision for nature and people.
What We Can Achieve Together:
The Executive Communications Officer serves as senior writer/editor for the Africa region with lead responsibility for writing and editing a variety of marketing & communication materials that leverage the Africa Regional Managing Director’s voice to advance The Nature Conservancy’s priorities. They lead in developing integrated communications products to help drive organizational strategy, goals, and objectives that build engagement, influence conservation action, and achieve awareness goals. They will work with senior executives to implement strategies to strengthen communications channels and to develop and maintain staff engagement. The Executive Communications Officer, writes for a variety of audiences including donors, policymakers, corporations, investors, board members and staff in service of and catalytic for conservation outcomes.
The Executive Communications Officer will lead the development of content reflective of The Regional Managing Director’s voice ranging from thought leadership content and promotions, earned media, digital campaigns, and social media, to communications in support of events and partners.
Their specific projects may include newsletters & magazines; executive-level speeches, talking points, and key messages; campaigns to support launches; collateral for all mediums (from print to Web); educational programs; and internal outreach and communication tools. They serve as an expert resource to Executives collaborating with the organization’s many departments and play a lead role in crafting communications solutions that meet specific project objectives, while simultaneously strengthening The Nature Conservancy brand. They participate in devising strategies and promotions in collaboration with internal departments to meet specific marketing and philanthropy targets.
The Executive Communications Writer/Editor, reports to and works closely with the Marketing and Communications Director for the Africa Region. They will work closely with a TNC network of experts across the business unit who will provide guidance on key messaging and targeted audiences including Strategy and Country Program leads.
This position can be based at any location in Africa where TNC has an office. This position may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. May require frequent travel domestically and/or internationally and evening and weekend hours.

Role Scope and Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and implement integrated internal strategic communication promotions to grow staff engagement
- Edit thought pieces that give a voice to the Executives as TNC contributes to shaping the conversation around nature-based solutions among government and private sector audiences
- Develop best-in-class communications and marketing assets, for Executives including print materials and digital content
- Drive Executives’ brand influence through innovative strategies tied to external, high-profile events, their digital footprint, and internal platforms in ways that impact and affects the public image
What You’ll Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in communication or a related field and a minimum of 7 years of related experience or equivalent combination
- Experience writing, editing, and proofreading messages for targeted audiences.
- Experience in developing internal communications, media, and engagement strategies, and measuring results
- Experience working with current Marketing and Communications trends, and practices and conceiving and implementing strategic, and creative initiatives including crisis communications
- Experience presenting to diverse audiences including some or all the following: internal and external executives, donors, members, board members, and the public or equivalent.
- Experience implementing and managing multiple complex projects.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated ability to conceive and write creatively for diverse and inclusive audiences including experience in translating complex scientific or technical content into compelling communications
- Demonstrated experience in developing strategic, high-quality marketing products and plans as well as familiarity with creative processes.
- Experience developing, implementing, and measuring communication and engagement plans/strategies for both internal and external audiences.
- Experience in journalism or fundraising writing, editing, and familiarity with communication technologies and best practices.
- Knowledge and application of current, evolving trends in relevant disciplines and ability to manipulate, analyze and interpret data.
- Excellent presentation and verbal communication skills including experience engaging diverse audiences including some or all the following: internal and external executives, donors, members, board members, Indigenous Peoples, and local community groups and the public or equivalent
- Thrives in a fast-paced environment, and has experience working with many internal and external partners simultaneously
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experiences are appreciated
