KEPSA Youth Nairobi Internship Programme.

The Kenya Youth Empowerment Project (KYEP) is a project financed by the Government of Kenya with a credit from the World Bank. KYEP is coordinated by the Office of the Prime Minister, and comprises three components: with Component 1 being an enhancement of the Kazi Kwa Vijana programme, and Component 3 focusing on capacity building within the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MOYAS).

KEPSA will be implementing Component 2 of the Kenya Youth Empowerment Project, providing internships and training for approximately 11,000 youth, over a period of four years, starting 2010 to 2014.

Internships will be 4 to 6 months in duration with about half of the time spent in the workplace and the other half in training that will be provided by third party training providers.

The training will be designed by employers. KEPSA/The Project will be placing interns in the following sectors: Energy; Finance; Tourism; ICT; Manufacturing and Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs).

Selected Interns will receive a stipend of KSh 6,000 per month, once the internship starts, as a contribution towards their transport costs and meals, as long as they attend the training and internships.

Approximately 1,350 youths will be chosen by lottery from eligible applicants in this first cycle of the internship program.

The eligible youth not selected by lottery may reapply in a later cycle. The youth who are chosen will participate in a two-week residential life-skills training module and will then attend an interview with employers for an internship.

The selection process by employers will be competitive and internship spaces will be available for only two thirds of those completing the life-skills training. Those not selected as interns are expected to benefit from the life-skills training. The programme will attempt to place interns in a sector of their choice, suited to their aptitude.

We are now seeking youth for the first cycle of the Internship Program in Nairobi, which is planned to commence in January/ February 2011. There will be subsequent cycles in Nairobi, plus Mombasa and a rural location at a later stage. To be eligible, you must be:

1. Between 15 and 29 years of age;
2. Have a minimum of 8 years of schooling;
3. Have been out of the school environment for more than one year;
4. Are currently not working;
5. Live in Nairobi, and be of Kenyan nationality
