Duties and Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the ICPAC Director the Climate Modeling Officer will be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:
• Implement and lead climate modeling activities of ICPAC including executing ensemble runs of the dynamical models over the GHA and undertake downscaling of the GCM outputs.
• Post processes the model ensemble data and create archive mass store of the model runs.
• Prepare map patterns of the model products for the GHA region and assess skills of key dynamical models • Undertake verification of the climate prediction products • Coordinate ICPAC’S regional capacity building on climate variability and change modeling, and assist the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) strengthen climate variability and change modeling capacity.
• Prepare periodic progress reports and annual reports on climate variability and change modeling as required by ICPAC • Undertake any other related duties as may be assigned by the Director
Minimum Qualifications:
Education
At least a Masters degree with specialization in climate modeling
Work experience
At least 5 years of working experience in operational climate modeling activities; Evidence of good knowledge and applications of general circulation models and regional climate models is required;
knowledge of climate change modeling will be advantageous.
Key Skills and Competencies:
Excellent computing skills including working with Fortran, Unix and Linux, other compiled computer languages such as. C, C++, Java, etc are necessary;
To have good knowledge of Matlab and parallel programming systems;
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
Ability to prepare written reports in a clear, concise and meaningful manner;
Ability to work with minimum supervision.
Language requirements: Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French would be an added advantage.
Age Limit: 30-50
Tenure of Appointment: The appointment is for five (5) years renewable subject to Satisfactory Performance
REMUNERATION: IGAD Salary Scale P3 US$ 28,430 plus other benefits
