Kenya: Psychotherapist/Trainer

The Center for Victims of Torture is seeking Psychotherapist/Trainers to work in the Dadaab Refugee Camps in northern Kenya with refugees who have suffered torture and war trauma. The position will oversee psychological interventions, including individual and group therapy with adults and children who are survivors of torture and provide training and supervision to psychosocial counselors. The position has a one-year renewable agreement. This is an unaccompanied post. The position will begin immediately.

Organization: The Center for Victims of Torture provides rehabilitative support to survivors of torture and works for the prevention of torture worldwide. We work locally, nationally and internationally through programs that provide treatment services, training, research and advocacy that heal survivors and end the practice of torture.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Clinical Management: Oversee psychosocial mental health interventions for refugee communities, in the form of individual counseling, group therapy, and community/large group trainings and activities.

• Supervision and Training: Design and carry out training programs for local and refugee staff counselors – including ongoing training, mentoring, modeling and supervision. Continually assess development of counselors and adapt training to meet their needs.

• Community Assessment: Mentor counselors to complete needs assessments in order to identify target populations and determine appropriate mental health interventions for people who have been tortured and/or traumatized by war.

• Community Collaboration: Coordinate services with other organizations operating in the camps and provide training to these organizations to better address the needs of torture survivors in the community.

• Reporting: Write and submit regular reports regarding clinical and training activities.

• Participate as member of the program team to achieve program objectives.

• Program/Project Evaluation: Participate in the implementation of program evaluation.

Qualifications: • Advanced degree in Psychology, Counseling or related field. Masters degree or equivalent required. • Extensive experience providing psychotherapy to individuals and groups. • Understanding of and experience implementing culturally appropriate mental health interventions, including individual, group and community-based approaches for people who have suffered torture and trauma. Experience with gender-based violence highly desirable. • Understanding of and experience developing curriculum and providing training for mental health counselors using adult experiential learning activities and training of trainers, and providing training on sensitization on the effects of trauma and war.
• Experience working in developing countries. Experience working in the Horn of Africa and/or refugee camp setting preferred. • Experience supervising staff required. Experience supervising mental health counselors preferred. • Skilled at carrying out needs assessment and program evaluations.
• Flexibility and adaptability to work in unpredictable, politically unstable, isolated environment, lacking in amenities.
• Demonstrated flexibility to adapt to changing requirements and needs.
• Skilled at working as a member of a team.
