Save the Children Nutrition Coordinator Job in Nairobi Kenya

Reports to: Area Representative (South Somalia) (Regular liaison with Nutrition Advisor and Deputy Nutrition Advisor on Technical aspects)
Location: Nairobi with regular visits to South Somalia
 The Nutrition Coordinator will have the stated purpose of leading the nutrition team for South Somalia.
The Nutrition Coordinator will be responsible for the effective design, implementation and coordination of
activities associated with the Save the Children Somalia / Somaliland nutrition interventions in South
Somalia. S/He is responsible for leading the design of the interventions, developing work plans; coordinating with partners in peer programs locally & regionally; stimulating & identifying innovative ideas amongst the team that will meet the project goals; establish best practices; produce reports; attend regular management meetings both in-house and cluster level; coordinating with other SCiSOM technical leads and relevant Humanitarian actors; and managing the local team as applicable (direct implementation / implementation through local partners).


 


 1. Program Design and ManagementLead the design and work plan development of the identified interventionsLead the charge in brainstorming innovative new ideas and stimulating such thinking amongst the SS nutrition teamGenerate quality monthly and quarterly reports on progress and analysis of program results and accomplishments.Report on lessons learned from failed interventions identified as innovative in the design stageEnsure that a holistic & community driven approach to the interventions is employedEnsure that interventions are closely coordinated with other SC programs (WASH, FSL, Education and Health)


.2. Coordination of Nutrition ActivitiesMonitor, guide and support the work of the Field Managers and other members of the Nutrition team for quality programming.Conduct regular visits to field sites security allowing to monitor implementation of activities and work with core staff in developing solutions to problems that may arise.Maintain regular communication with Nutrition staff in the field, Nutrition Advisor and SS management.Receive regular and timely reports from Field Managers, and take appropriate action issues raised.Facilitate team work and problem solving skills.Carry out work with respect to SC security concerns, protocols and established policy.Protect all staff and beneficiaries from any form of exploitation including sexually exploitative relationships.3. Budget and Grants ManagementPlan, Monitor and review program expenditure on monthly, quarterly & annuallyTra


ck and report on program indicators at both national and field levels to ensure that program implementation meets donor requirements and SC internal control procedures and that program deliverables are met


Develop M&E best practices and metrics in collaboration with the M&E teamOversee the establishment of an efficient and effective system for recording and reporting on program activities, overall statistics and materials ordering, distribution and use.Ensure program data is updated accordingly and information used for learningEnsure nutrition database and timely and accurate analysis of the information.Lead Nutrition core staff in identifying training needs and developing capacity building and training programs and packages requiredP articipate in the conduct of formal and informal training sessions/seminars and capacity building activities as appropriate. Lead the team to develop and execute appropriate training and capacity building measures to support community structures and partners.Communicate and meet with the relevant regional and local team members associated Nutrition activities in SSCoordinate with the relevant actors such as local authorities, agencies, national and international NGOs, donors, community leaders and other beneficiaries to further the work of the SC Nutrition program.Participate in discussions with relevant stakeholders to familiarize them with the respective nutrition projects and ensure understanding, cooperation and backing from the start.Attend other key meetings that may impact on SC nutrition program

 Area Representative South Somalia – Direct SupervisorNutrition Advisor and Deputy Nutrition Advisor (Somalia / Somaliland) – Technical supportHumanitarian Advisor – Field supportTechnical Coordinators of other SC Somalia programsField ManagersSC M&E / Reporting focal pointsSC Emergency Response teamLocal Authorities and agencies at national level involved in Nutrition workPartner organizations’ staffDonors and donor representatives as assigned by the Area representativeHealth / Public Health / Nutrition BSc or equivalentSubstantial emergency nutrition experience of (2-4 years) including the design and implementation of feeding programs and their analysis and monitoring and evaluation.Experience in planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating CTC programmesExperience in conducting nutrition assessments (survey design, implementation and analysis using the SMART method and package, an ability to include sound causal analysis) and an understanding of nutritional surveillance and information systems.Proven capacity to supervise, train and coach national staff.Experience and ability to represent Save the Children's nutrition work in external meetings.Willingness and capacity to be flexible and accommodating when faced with difficult and frustrating working conditions.Demonstrable ability at report writing and excellent communication skillsExperience of working safely in hostile and insecure environmentsSelf-motivated and enthusiastic personality, commitment to understanding and improving the lives of children in an emergency contextAbility and willingness to frequently travel and stay in the fieldAbility to work under extreme pressure and meet deadlines with minimal guidanceFluent written and spoken EnglishDistance management experienceQualified nurse with primary health care / community health care experienceAwareness and understanding of food security and livelihoods programming options and other generic programming options for addressing the underlying causes of malnutritionExperience of distance management of staff/resources in a remote locationSomali language skillsKnowledge of the region – Horn of Africa in general; Somalia especiallyCoaching and training skills with a view to capacity strengthening of staff and partnersExperience of participative processes involving children, and ability to coach staff in mainstreaming good practiceThe responsibilities of the post may require the post holder to have regular contact with children or young people and, in the overseas context all posts are considered to be level 3 posts in view of potential situations which may allow expatriates unsupervised access to vulnerable children and young people.
