4+ Years Experience Job
By Jane Okoth
When looking for a job, apart from gaining experience and growing professionally, the other important aspect is the salary. We all want jobs that will make us financially independent because someone has to put food on the table and pay the bills.
How would you feel if you found a job within your profession but the pay does not concur with your experience?
Lawrence Mugambi* a job seeker wrote in an email
How I encountered a low paying finance job
“I graduated from the university with a Bcom, Finance option and after graduating, I was lucky enough to get a finance job with a medium sized company. I have been working for the company for close to 4 years and have now decided to grow career wise by seeking other employment opportunities within my field.
After months of sending CVs to various companies, I have been offered another job in my particular field of interest which is a Male Debt Collector post. It is a nice opportunity but the shocking thing is that the salary is only K’sh 30,000. To top it all, the position requires a graduate with more than 4 years of working experience!! What was the employer thinking when offering this embarrassing package?
My 4 years working experience does not match the salary
I know that jobs in the country are hard to come by considering how competitive the market is but this opportunity is not worth it. I have spent more than this in my quest to get education not to mention all my years of working experience! To top it all, I have a family that depends on me 100%. This makes me ask; what is wrong with Kenyan employers?
What should I do? Should I take the job and build more experience quickly and keep applying for other jobs? Or should I turn it down?” he asks.
What advice would you give Lawrence? Should he give the job a try or not
